Following a competitive application process, Anthony (Tony) K. Sharp was invited into Peace corps service for Kazakhstan in Central Asia.
2004-2006

On August 22, 2006 he entered pre-service training in Talghar, Kazakhstan. Following 10 weeks of intensive technical, cross-cultural, safety and security, and language training.  He was sworn-in as a Peace Corps Volunteer on November 11, 2006 and made the commitment to service in Kazakhstan for the next 24 months.

Mr. Sharp worked with the Non-governmental Organization named Ak-Kem-Ridder, and ecological-interest NGO, located in the East Kazakhstan Oblast town of Ridder. The organization specializes in ecological preservation, education and tourism, forest sustainability and restoration of forests.

During his affiliation with Ak-Kem-Ridder, Mr. Sharp completed numerous projects including:

Mr. Sharp worked as a Protected Areas Consultant who along with his regular assignments, visited 17 schools and two universities on a monthly basis where he led discussions on ecology, forest health and healthy youth topics. Nearly 200 students a month attended the lectures. He additionally participated in weekend outdoor activities.  He helped develop the Grey Meadow eco-tourism base camp with log cabins, trail construction and mapping and a series of seminars on ecological topics.

As part of his work with Ak-Kem-Ridder he was involved in planting and tending tree nearly 500 trees between the ages of one to seven years of age.

==Grant Applications===
 +
Mr. Sharp participated in the drafting of two USAID grant applications – one to fund the teaching residents about the ecology of the Altai Mountain Range and to fund the on-going  Save Your Forest tree farm.  This grant helped launch the first publication featuring the post-Soviet native Altai tree as well as materials to build a large mobile classroom tee pee.  Mr. Sharp also taught project management, monitoring and evaluation and grant writing skills to staff of Ak-Kem-Ridder.

The second successful grant application funded the remodeling of the Ak-Kem-Ridder office which led to the organization becoming the region’s first ecological tourism and visitor center.

-Partnerships
 +
Mr. Sharp helped create a partnership between Ak-Kem-Ridder and the Idea Wild organization based in Colorado. Idea Wild provided supplies for a forest orientation and environment ethics seminar (including compass and GPS usage).  Through partnership with the Global Environmental Fund, Mr. Sharp helped teach youth how to use audio visual equipment (video, digital cameras, microphones, and computer programs).  The youth thus trained, interviewed residents and created a video about both the problems and the future of their village (Paperechna on the Russian/Kazakh border).

«Организация информационно-экологического визит-центра в Риддере как одного из перспективных путей развития сельского, экологического туризма в  районе».

 +
В настоящее время на территории Восточно-Казахстанской области, в городе Риддер идет реализация государственной программы по развитию экологического туризма. Создаются зоны, где прокладываются новые экологотуристические маршруты и экологические тропы, подготавливаются места отдыха, оборудуются стоянки и кемпинги. Налаживается сотрудничество между особо охраняемыми природными территориями, государственными структурами,  турфирмами, неправительственными организациями, крестьянскими хозяйствами, школами и ВУЗами. Активно вовлекается в сотрудничество местное население.

Население региона самостоятельно разработали сеть прогулочных маршрутов для туристов, выявляются  мастера народных промыслов. Однако опрос первых посетителей, первых экотуристов показал, что туристы, въезжая в регион,  сталкиваются с проблемой получить подробную информацию о предлагаемых экотуристических услугах, питании, экскурсиях, перечне и стоимости услуг,  в каком месте предпочтительнее остановиться и какими услугами воспользоваться.  В городе Риддер досуг организован слабо, имеется один музей, хотя история  региона богата. К тому же, туристам хотелось бы получить подробную информацию о нашем регионе. Конечно, по ходу выполнения своих обязанностей, местные жители, задействованные в обслуживании туристов, отвечают на интересующие туристов вопросы. Но, чтобы подобные контакты были эффективны, нужно, чтобы персонал был достаточно образованным, умел разговаривать с гостями должным образом, знал правила гостеприимства.

Для решения этой проблемы в регионе – в городе Риддер необходимо создать образовательный визит-центр. В таких центрах, как показывает мировая практика,  наиболее удачно ведется многопрофильная пропагандистско-просветительская работа с посетителями. Здесь туристы могли бы получить полную информацию о гостевых домах, о местах, которые могут принять туристов, об истории региона, увидеть образцы различных изделий местных мастеров, получить квалифицированное сопровождение членами  ОМО ТЭК «Ак-Кем-Риддер» на прогулках по окрестностям и экскурсиях. Сопровождающий покажет туристам именно то, в чем та или иная группа более всего заинтересована.  Посетителям могут быть предоставлены брошюры с картами и другой информацией об отдельных участках, которые могут показаться им интересными,  и,  которые отмечены на местности указательными знаками.  Туристы,  со своей стороны,  должны узнать не только о  местных традициях и биоразнообразии на этой территории, но и о том, как природа нуждается в сохранении, как и какие  доходы от экотуризма способствуют сохранению биоразнообразия региона. Визит-центр,  обеспечивая  рынок сбыта и,  возобновляя интерес к местным обычаям, будет способствовать сохранению местных обычаев, традиций и прикладного искусства. Кроме того,  визит-центр будет  проводить различные природоохранные мероприятия: игры, викторины и фестивали, готовить выставки по природным и культурным ресурсам Заповедных лесных территорий, проводить лекции и беседы с посетителями с демонстрацией фотографий, видиофильмов. Для самых маленьких посетителей будет устроен кукольный театр на темы, взятые из жизни леса и его обитателей. Здесь же будет создан небольшой минимузей с краеведческо-экологической направленностью. В визит-центре можно будет получить информацию об объектах и явлениях, труднодоступных для наблюдения на маршруте местах. Работу будут вести члены Эколого-туристского клуба «Ак-Кем-Риддер», и партнеры проекта: члены  ЭТК «Ирбис», Государственного Учреждения Западно-Алтайского государственного природного заповедника в прошедшие специальную туристскую подготовку и обучение работы с туристскими группами. У сотрудников визит-центра будет еще одна функция. Это помощь посетителям, совместно с службой ЧС в экстренных случаях: содействие в поиске заблудившихся посетителей,  оказание первой медицинской помощи, и т.д. Таким образом, реализация проекта позволит объединить усилия местных жителей, неправительственных организаций, местных исполнительных органов и другого партнера Государственного Учреждения Западно-Алтайского государственного природного заповедника в развитии сельского, экологического туризма, проведении природоохранной и образовательной работы с посетителями,  решении проблем досуга туристов, а также проведении культурного обмена между местными жителями и туристами.

Statement of Need

-Background information – Ridder and NGO <<Ak-Kem Ridder>>
 +
Ridder is a town in the Eastern Kazakhstan Oblast in Kazakhstan with a population of approximately 60,000 people with a 70 / 25 Russian / Kazakh demographic respectively.
 +
<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> was registered in 1995, and was re-registered in 2003 due to the name change of the town which was previously called Leninogorsk.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> holds annual summer camps, educates the youth about ecological issues, plants trees, and provides eco-tourist services and education.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is also extremely active in ecological events held in Ridder, including Earth Day, March for Parks, “We Shall Protect Our Fir Trees.”  etc.  Since 1995, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has been involved in ecological education of the Ridder youth.  The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> club is based in the town of Ridder, whereas the eco-tourist base camp ‘The Grey Meadow’ is located in the Altai mountain range approximately 30 kilometers north of Ridder. Outdoor recreation, work, and eco-tourism keeps people fit, informed, and binds family and friends.  Such an organization and project as <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ will allow the local youth and citizens to be stronger, more social, ecologically educated, and more proactive about issues.

-Description of problem and need
 +
The tourism industry in Ridder Kazakhstan is booming, however; a booming industry does have problems and opportunities.  Currently in Ridder, there are 5 hotels, 8 tourist camps, 1 historical museum (not ecologically educating), 2 downhill ski slopes, 2 ecological NGO’s, and a State ran Nature Preserve 35 kilometers near.  In the nearby city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, there are 6 other tourist organizations.  The potential of Ridder becoming a major tourist hub of Central Asia is more than possible, although there are problems with the current situation.

One problem is that tourists currently do not have any access to reliable information about the tourist opportunities of the Altay.  Currently, there is no central tourist office in the area that specializes in tourism and ecological education.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has an ideal office space which is visually awful.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is now ready to remodel that office space and become the central tourist organization in Altay region of Kazakhstan.

There is also a problem with the growing disconnect with nature among the inhabitants of the area.  This growing disconnect has serious consequences for the future stewardship of their public lands.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is concerned about the ecological health of Kazakhstan.  The community of Ridder has specifically demanded more ecological and natural resource education aimed to the youth.  It is Youth Eco-Tourist Club <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> duty to answer that call for more ecological education.  This increase in ecological education also meets the ‘Green Country 2030’ mandate by Kazakhstan’s Presidential orders.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> goals are ambitious and serious. The project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ will be the first step in a long-term effort to of educating the citizens and visitors of the East Kazakhstan Oblast about ecology of the area.  Despite the obvious need, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> currently lacks some of the necessary equipment, materials and funding to accomplish this task.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is requesting the financial support for a seminar and booklet to teach the community of Ridder on tourism new skills and opportunities.  Financial support will also include necessary materials associated with the creation of an eco-tourism hub.  The following is a detailed explanation of <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> ecological education program project titled: ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ :

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking the SPA grant committee for $2,959.28 to help complete the ecological education project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ goals and objectives:

Vision Statement:
 +
A beautifully natural Kazakhstan West-Altay region with ecologically educated citizens and tourists.
 +
Goal #1:  An ecological tourist visitor’s center will be raised in Ridder Kazakhstan.  This visitor’s center will display natural artwork and interpret local ecological issues of the East Kazakhstan Oblast.
 +
-Objective #1; Remodel club to a professional standard by May 31st 2008.  Tasks for remodeling include replacing and painting the floors, wallpapering the walls, installing ceiling tiles, installing ceramic kitchen tiles, installing new windows, and a complete office make-over.
 +
-Objective #2; Create the Eco-Hub in the recently remodeled office space providing tourists information of the Altay mountain range and tourist opportunities.  This information will be provided through the creation of a small natural museum, books, photos, knowledgeable staff, ecological oriented meetings, guest speakers, ecological classes.  The Eco-Hub will also have natural art to display and sell to the community and visiting tourists.  The Eco-Hub will be done and ready to be viewed by the public by June 31st 2008.  Tasks of this goal include getting a new business meeting table and chairs, building display booths, displaying photos, booklets, books, and informative flyers about the tourist options of the region.

Goal #2:  Conduct a seminar teaching local community members (30+) aspects of the tourism industry, building community capacity to handle tourists coming to the area.

-Objective #1; Create an informative booklet for seminar attendees.  The booklet is very specific to the Altay region, and is designed to answer questions tourists may have about the Altay area.  The booklet will educate its readers about aspects of the tourism industry within the local Altay area.  The booklet will explain the following to its readers:

-The different opportunities for tourism in the area and how to effectively interpret local traditions.

-Altay bio-diversity information and its importance. 
 +
-How to effectively create festivals & exhibits. 
 +
-How to lecture and demonstrate photographs.

-How to educate and keep tourists safe while on tours.

-How to teach environmental ethics that are important to keeping the nature pristine in the West Altay.

The booklet will be supplemental and directly related to the seminar.  The booklet will be created using Microsoft Publisher and be printed and ready for the seminar by June 25th 2008.  The booklets table of contents can be viewed in addenda #5.  The booklet survey to help with the project evaluation can be viewed in addenda #6.

-Objective #2; On the 27th, 28th, 29th of June, 2008, a 3 day seminar at the recently remodeled office will teach local community members (30+) aspects and opportunities of the tourism industry the local Ridder community.  The seminar will be taught by <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> Coordinator Natasha Denisova, and three other invited lecturers from organizations in the East Kazakhstan oblast.  This seminar will build community capacity to handle tourists visiting the area.  The seminar will teach in-depth about the subjects written in the booklet. The post-seminar survey that will help project evaluation can be viewed in addenda #2.  A sample seminar day can be viewed in addenda #4.  Below describes the booklet that the seminar is based upon.  Booklet topics are the same as the seminar topics.

Target Group:
 +
The Eco-Hub will target members of the Ridder and East Kazakhstan community.  Local, Kazakhstanian, and International tourists will be targeted to visit the West-Altay, with a reliable tourist center upon arrival.  Tourists will enjoy the one central location to find all holiday options the East Kazakhstan Oblast has to offer.  Ridder community members will benefit with the increase of tourism in the area.  Local artists and craftsman will be solicited to sell their natural artwork in the space created.  The office will be a venue for both the buyers and sellers to meet in one space.  Science teachers and students will have a new venue to learn and display their ideas and knowledge.  Teachers will have a new place to take their students to learn about ecological issues of the ‘Roodnum Altay’.  Scientists of Kazakhstan will be interested in seeing the interpretation of the East Kazakhstan Oblast.  The Ridder citizens will have access to information from the previous work done by the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization.  The schools and colleges will especially be targeted and educated of the importance of future ecological planning and management, with an emphasis on sustainability and rational usage.  Ultimately, the local environment, and all of the biological inhabitants of the region will benefit from this sustainable oriented ecological visitors center.

This project has two goals:

This is the project design and list of tasks to be completed beginning with the acceptance of this project by the SPA Grant Committee.

Project Design:
 +
The project, ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’  is designed by the NGO <<Ak-Kem-Ridder>> in coordination with the greater Ridder community.  The town of Ridder (including media, local NGO’s, school’s, colleges, Akimat, government organization, citizens) has expressed a need for more ecological education.  This project has been designed to achieve each objective.  Management of the project will include three club leaders and a Peace Corps Volunteer (Anthony Sharp).  The leaders will see that the project is kept on schedule and carried out as planned.  Members of this group are to meet on a bi-weekly basis, at the time of regular club meetings.  Progress, concerns, problems, and suggestions are to be discussed at these regular meetings.  Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, leaders are to be in consistent contact with the partners mentioned throughout this document to insure an efficient and complete project.

Capacity for <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> to complete project:

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has the educational capacity to complete this project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ and continue the project well into the future.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> already works with local government partners, including the West Altai Nature Preserve, Botanical Garden of Ridder, and other ecological and educational organizations.  Furthermore, the project includes many youth volunteers with an interest in increasing their ecological knowledge.

1.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has researched all projects that will be undertaken upon the start of this project. All volunteer construction workers are capable of all projects and have a history of working on similar projects except for the window installation.  Each project is clear and will be finished in the time frame given.  The time frame for the completion of these projects is very reasonable.  If unforeseen problems will arise, the organization will seek other, more experienced volunteer construction workers.

2.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will contact all people that have previously expressed interest in such a seminar.  The 30 potential seminar attendees have already expressed interest and are excited for an exact date of this seminar.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will give continual updates throughout the project period for the invited seminar attendees.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> currently has a list of 30+ people who would be interested in attending such a seminar.  These people will all be contacted asap.

3.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has an ambitious advertisement program that will continually update citizens of this visitor’s center.  The radio program is sure to let people know about the Eco-Hub.  We will invite other modes of local mass media for the grand opening.  Ridder is a town full of scientists, tourists, and sportsman with a genuine interest in such ecological projects as Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan.  As stated below in the financial section, schools will be scheduled to keep regular people / income coming in throughout the year.  Summer is very busy in Ridder with tourism.  Tourists will come if interested and properly marketed to.

Financial:

The Eco-Hub will charge the fee of 100 KzT per person upon entrance.  The Ridder museum receives 500+ visitors a month, over 6,000 people a year.  The Eco-Hub plans, with intense marketing, to receive that many visitors or more.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is ready to set up regular school visits, having many different classes visit on a scheduled basis.  Schools will be charged with group rates.  There are 17 schools in Ridder.  With a regular weekly schedule of each ‘form’ from each school, the funds collected will help keep regular income to the Eco-Hub throughout the slower winter months.  The Eco-Hub is not entirely based on profits, but also amount of people educated.  The Aki-Mat pays for the rent of the office space, while the other utilities of water, heat and electricity are minimal. Beyond the money collected from admission to the Eco-Hub, there will be other items sold.  Books, arts, crafts, professional photographs in frames and locally created movies will be sold to the visitors.  The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> base camp ‘The Grey Meadow’ is also expected to get a boost of tourists because more people will know about the tourist opportunity in the area.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has always had an intense PR and marketing campaigns.  The organization utilizes the multiple media sources.  The internet will be utilized on many free postings.  The radio air time purchased with spa grant funds will be utilized for marketing.  There is a local public access television station ‘Ridder TV’ which will be notified and invited for the opening of Eco-Hub. Newspaper articles will be written.

The project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ has a wonderful future.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continually ecologically educate the people through as many venues as possible.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is an NGO committed to complete this project.  Regular meetings at the office in Ridder will ensure a consistent force to continue the project.  The Eco-Hub will be a reliable space for all those interested. It will take time to refine the visitors center into the effective center <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> envisions.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continue to seek further partnerships from club members, as well as local, national, and international supporters.  Through further partnerships, public or private, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> plans to develop more education and tourist options for citizens.  This grant is designed to get <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> started on a large tourism and eco-educated project, with a vision of a beautifully natural Kazakhstan West-Altay region with ecologically educated citizens and tourists.

Projects Alignment with SPA Objectives and Criteria-

Fulfilling the measures given by the project will allow an ecological tourism visitor’s center and a community ready to handle the tourists who come and seek.  The creation of the Eco-Hub visitor’s center and production of the seminar to teach local community members will effectively increase the tourism, and tourist options of the Ridder area.  It is our hypothesis that this summer more tourists will be enticed to visit the beautiful nature that the West-Altay offers, and a population with an in-depth knowledge of tourism, history, tradition, ecology, forests, and trees.  Beyond a hypothesis, it is our duty to have an Eco-Hub created, with doors open to educate visitors from far and near by summer of 2008.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will use the multi functional table for the seminar and well into the future with the various activities the organization is involved in.  This large table is round and seats 30 people at a time.  It provides a professional setting for a meeting of many people.  These meetings will allow many people at once to describe all environmental issues.  The table is also unique by the fact that it easily comes apart into 20 separate desks.  This table will be able to turn one room into either a classroom or round table business discussion room.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will utilize both of these functions for the consistent meetings and ecological classes that will be held in this office space.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking that the Spa grant cover the price of the 50,000 KzT ($416.66) business table.

The Eco-Hub remodeling project deals with an incredible amount of materials that need to be shipped directly to the office.  The 30 chairs and large table, along with the tiles, floor planks, and wallpaper are all items that need vehicular support to arrive at the office when needed.  It is estimated that the number of trips that need to be taken is 24.  A standard taxi in Ridder costs 250 – 300 KzT, however; it is necessary to have a van with the cargo space available to ship this large and bulky items more economically.  A taxi (van) costs 500 KzT ($4.16) every trip.  24 trips will cost 12,000 KzT ($100.00) total.  The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization has agreed to pay for half of these trips, paying 6,000 Kzt ($50.00) for the transportation of materials a cash contribution.  The other half of the transportation of materials is asked for Spa to cover: 6,000 KzT ($50.00).

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for funds to have ecological topics to be available for the entire community, open for discussion, as well as an opportunity to advertise the new Eco-Hub.  The radio air time will serve as a way to pass this ecological information on to the community.  There will be one 30 minute radio program aired in June of 2008.  This radio program will discuss the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> Eco-Hub grand opening, as well as issues about the organizations tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc.  The radio program is a very effective way to reach the most people, spreading the word of ecology on a local basis. The discussion will be local listeners calling to give their opinion and to ask questions.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organizations coordinator Natasha Denisova will be the featured guests, as she is a specialist about ecological issues pertaining to the Altay region of Kazakhstan.  The radio program will be aired on radio channel ‘Maksat’ with a minimum listener audience of 25,000+ citizens.  The radio program will costs 9,000 KzT ($75.00) total.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has purchased high quality, functional plastic windows to be installed in the office space.  3 windows, 170 x 130 centimeters are much more effective than the current glass windows at the office.  These windows open vertically and horizontally.  They are more economical due to the modern insulation and will keep the office warm in the winter, which is a current problem.  Each window cost 35,000 KzT ($291.66).  The 3 windows cost the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization a total of 105,000 KzT ($875.00) as a cash contribution.

The community has identified a serious deforestation issue in the area surrounding Ridder BKO KZ.  Educating the community is the primary method to help the current deforestation problem.  Re-planting a forest is not the solution if the citizens are unaware of proper stewardship methods.  Deforestation causes considerable degradation to the land.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is thoroughly engaged with local environmental issues of land use and water quality, including cooperation with local organizations such as the West-Altai Nature Preserve, and the Botanical Garden of Ridder.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has a goal to begin an aggressive educational campaign for the local community aimed to inform the public about the ecology of the area, with special interests concentrated on the trees and forested land in the Ridder area.

As a protected areas volunteer, I have realized and comprehended the dire need of an ecological education campaign in this area.  The land here is suffering due to poor management.  Current logging practices (both legal and illegal) are unsustainable and environmentally catastrophic.  This project will educate the general public about the importance of a healthy, natural forest.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> knows that the first step to battle deforestation is through an ecological education program. This project has two goals which will be fulfilled.  The first is to conduct a three day seminar at the eco-tour base camp on how to plant trees and seeds.  The second goal is to conduct an environmental education campaign to increase the general knowledge of the population of Ridder and the oblast of ecological problems in the area.

I will help my organization achieve their mission in four of the six priority indicators:

Resources and equipment (hand tools) will be purchased and will be used in the seminar, as well as in the future for more tree and seed planting efforts.  Tools will also be needed to maintain the income generating Canadian Blue Spruce (reference next indicator).

Income generation will occur as 200 grams of specialty seed (Canadian Blue Spruce) will be  grown harvested and sold.  This exotic tree is in high demand for purchase with the local residents of this area for decorational purposes.  These trees will be for sale, not to be used for any re-forestation practices in the future.

Training will take place at the seminar, as there will be 20 seminar attendees obtaining a new skill of how to plant trees and seeds.  Schools, colleges, and universities will also benefit, as lectures are to be given.

The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> NGO will be developed as the equipment will aid in future activities, as well as a consistent selling of the specialty trees (mentioned above) to become a sustainable business.  The NGO will develop as more people are involved in outdoor activities and projects (increased tourist population).

This project directly contributes to my assignment as a protected areas volunteer, as I, and my host organization, are protecting the ecology of the local area and educating the local community in the most effective way available.

1)Create and print an informative booklet for the seminar, presentations, and other informative purposes to be used in the future.  The booklet will describe the process of the planting a nursery, a tree, and a seed.

2)A wig wam cover will be created for a classroom setting at the seminar.  The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> club volunteers will sew and create the wig-wam cover.  The wig-wam cover will be completed by July 15th 2007. A wig-wam will provide a large shelter in the case of poor weather.

3)A 3 day seminar at the site of planting on August 11th, 12th, and 13th 2007. The seminar will show in person what the booklet can only describe.  The seminar will teach in-depth techniques on how to begin a nursery, plant a tree and a seed.

4)Plant seeds and trans-plant trees. Seeds (Native Kidder, Siberian Fir, and Canadian Blue Spruce) will be planted on 15 linear meters  at the base camp. The Native Kidder and Siberian Fir are local / native trees.  The Canadian Blue Spruce is an exotic tree not intended for planting in a natural setting; rather, the Canadian Blue Spruce is to be harvested and sold to the citizens of Ridder for decorational purposes.  50 donated (in-kind expense), currently maturing trees at the base camp will be trans-planted from the base camp to areas surrounding and within the town of Ridder after the seminar.  Seminar attendees will have growing trees to take home with them and transplant.  Seminar attendees will be able to have a holistic understanding of the early stages of seed / tree plantation and development, as well as the importance of re-forestation (the bigger picture) and a better knowledge of ecology.

5)Two videos will be made.  Throughout the entirety of the project, photos and filming of events will be made of all major activities, meetings, and projects.  A professional camera operator will be filming all major events of this project.  One video will be a general movie, the second will be more technical.  The films will be used for future lectures.  The videos will be a montage of all of the steps necessary to re-create such a tree re-plantation project.  One club volunteer will be an aid to the camera operator, learning a new skill.

6)Over the course of six months, a total of six articles written in the local Ridder newspaper ‘Leninogorsk Pravda’ discussing the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc. Articles are to be written with the latest news and events of the area. Articles will come out every month, starting in June through November 2007.

Goal #1:  Conduct a 3 day seminar at the eco-tourism base camp teaching 20 citizens how to plant and take care of trees and seeds.

-Objective #1; Create and print an informative booklet for the seminar, presentations, and other informative purposes to be used in the future.  The booklet will describe the process of the planting a nursery, a tree, and a seed.  Refer to addenda to see a table of contents showing the planned topics to be written.

-Objective #2; A 3 day seminar at the site of planting on August 11th, 12th, and 13th  2007. The seminar will relate to the booklet created in objective #1.  The seminar will teach in-depth techniques on how to begin a nursery, plant a tree and a seed.  Seminar attendees will be able to have a holistic understanding of the early stages of seed / tree plantation and development, as well as the importance of re-forestation (the bigger picture) and a better knowledge of ecology.  Refer to addenda to view one of the three planned days of the seminar.

This project has the potential to have a very big impact for everyone in the East Kazakhstan Oblast.  All will benefit from a healthy natural surrounding.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has a plan to invite the interested and active biology teachers, biology students recommended by the selected biology teachers and orphans from the local orphanage.  Seven biology teachers, seven biology students, and six orphans, totaling 20 seminar attendees.  Other citizens will have access to information, as we will be raising awareness about forestry issues through radio, newspapers, lectures and movies.  Booklets will be available, as well as information left on CD-ROM at the lecture halls.

Project Design:

The project, ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’  was designed by the NGO <<Ak-Kem-Ridder>> in coordination with the greater Ridder community.  The town of Ridder (including media, local NGO’s, school’s, colleges, Akimat, government organization, citizens) has expressed a need for more ecological education.  This project has been designed to achieve each objective.  Management of the project will include four club leaders and a Peace Corps volunteer (myself).  The leaders will see that the project is kept on schedule and carried out as planned.  Members of this group are to meet on a bi-weekly basis, at the time of regular club meetings.  Progress, concerns, problems, and suggestions are to be discussed at these regular meetings.  Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, leaders are to be in consistent contact with the partners mentioned throughout this document to insure an efficient and complete project.  The final product of this project will be community set on ‘planting their own forest and keeping it alive’.

It is accepted that weather is uncontrollable.  The organization is familiar with weather related problems, that is why we have planned enough time in order to complete projects on time.  Research will be done for methods of coping with unexpected weather that may effect the seeds and trees.  We will also notify the seminar attendees that if there is poor weather to be expected, to leave the following two weekends open for the seminar.

The project ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’ is in its infancy.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder has future plans in the sphere of re-forestation, and is a NGO committed to complete this project.  Regular meetings at the office in Ridder will ensure a consistent force to continue the project.  Continual watering and maintenance and the nursery will be necessary.

The trees planted this year will need to grow for three years before transplantation can take place.  This program is only the beginning of a sustainable project designed to re-plant the land in the East Kazakhstan Oblast.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continue to seek out financial assistance from club members, as well as local, national, and international supporters.  Seeds are to be planted every summer for many years to come.  Once the trees have developed over the course of three years, a new goal will emerge.  The future goal will be to transplant the maturing trees into the noted areas in need of forest re-plantation.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> realizes that there is an inherent risk of personal injury to volunteers, seminar attendees, staff members, tourists...etc.  We will be working with hand tools out in the field.  The risk of personal injury is great enough to justify the first-aid kit to minimize greater injury that could be caused without necessary first response supplies.  All staff members have had training in first response aid.  The base camp is well over 30 kilometers from the nearest place of medical support.  It is imperative for the SPA grant to provide funding for a kit of proper equipment available in the case of any minor incident or major emergency.  The price of the First aid kit is 5,000 KZT ($40.98)

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for the funds to purchase forty (40) CD-R’s and three (3) CD-RW’s to make digital copies of the booklet, seminar information, the videos, and other ecological information.  These discs are to be left as reference material when <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> goes to the various schools, colleges, and universities in the area.  It is important to leave information with these places when the need for a more in-depth research arises. The price of one CD-R is 120 KZT, 40 CD-R’s is 4,800 KZT ($39.34).  The price of a CD-RW is 350 KZT, and the price of 3 CD-RW’s is 1,050 KZT ($8.61)

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is also asking the SPA grant to provide funds for four (4) 8mm video cassettes to supply the video camera operator, and ten (10) audio cassette tapes.  8mm video tapes cost 800 KZT each, 4 tapes will cost 3,200 KZT ($26.23).  The original 8mm films will be retrieved after the editing process.  Audio cassette tapes cost 200 KZT, and 10 audio tapes will cost 2,000 KZT ($16.39).  The ten (10) audio cassette tapes will record the radio lectures and be saved for later use, as well as to be distributed to local bus and taxi drivers.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>>> staff will ask the drivers to re-play the informative lectures for their passengers for an increased amount of air time and an opportunity for the public to be informed.

The cost of having a booklet printed through a private printing house company titled ‘Profit’ in Ust Kamenogorsk would cost a total of 30,000 KZT (1,000 booklets at 30 KZT each).  With that in mind, along with <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> desire to be a more sustainable organization, we researched the cost of a multi-purpose printer (scanner / copier) at the ‘Electronics’ electronic store in Ust-Kamenogorsk to cost 29,990 KZT ($245.82).  Black ink cartridge costs 2,500 each. Four black cartridges are to cost a total of 10,000 Kzt ($81.96).  One color ink cartridge will be needed to print the color photos in the booklet.  One color ink cartridge costs 8,000 KzT ($65.50)  A block of paper consisting 500 pieces of paper costs 600 KzT.  Five blocks are to be needed totaling 3,000 KzT ($24.59).  The total cost of printing these booklets will costs 50,990 KzT ($417.95). There is also a local Ridder company ‘Compas’ that provides repair services of all computer related equipment. We are asking the SPA grant committee to realize our desire to be a more sustainable organization, and realize the long term amount of money to be saved with the single cost of a printer.

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for the funds to purchase a strong fabric material to create a classroom setting (wig wam) for those attending the seminar, plus other activities and events at the base camp.  A wig wam is preferred in this environment instead of a yurt, due to the heavy amount of snowfall.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> already has posts ready for the wig wam.  In the past, the wig-wam was covered using a plastic tarp.  Needless to say, the low quality tarp could not stand up to the elements associated with the region.  The funds would be used to purchase a high quality canvas like material that will need to be sewn for a sturdy classroom.  The cabins currently at the base camp are much too small to teach 20+ people at the same time.  In the case of poor weather, the wig wam will serve as a warming and lunch room to get out of poor weather.  Models have been designed, and 150 meters squared of this fabric would be enough to make a proper cover for the classroom.  The material costs 400 KzT per square meter, totaling 60,000 KzT ($491.80).

According to ‘Справочник Лесничего’ (Spravochnek Leshechevo) Moscow 1980, a book specializing in tree and seed planting, along with <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> staff member Natasha Denisova (diploma attached) the mentioned seeds are to be purchased according to the following weights.  It is a common forestry practice to order the double amount of seeds due to the near 50% failure rate within the first planting.  Both of the native trees (Siberian Fir and Native Kidder) are to be bought from Ridder's local forestry agency. 1 kilogram of Native Kidder seeds for 20,000 KzT ($163.93) and 200 grams of Siberian Fir seeds for 4,000 KzT ($32.79).  The specialty decorative Canadian Blue Spruce is to be bought from a specialty arboretum in Issyk.  The only seller in Kazakhstan for this species, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> seeks to gain more financial security producing such a sought after tree.  200 grams of Canadian Blue Spruce seeds are needed, costing 4,000 KzT ($32.79).  Seeds for the Canadian Blue Spruce is an important income generating activity that will be undertaken by the NGO for future sustainability.

Other: Radio and newspaper education

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for funds to have ecological topics to be available for the entire community, open for discussion.  Both the radio and newspaper space will serve as a way to pass this ecological information on to the community.  As previously discussed, there will be a total of six articles written in the local Ridder newspaper.  These articles will be printed each month, June – November 2007. Articles are to be written discussing the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc.  There will also be radio programs that will describe <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> forestry re-plantation project, other local forestry and ecological education projects.  Three total radio programs are to be aired in July, August, and September 2007.  These sources of mass media will be the most effective way to reach the most amount of people, spreading the word of ecology on a local basis.  Each radio lecture and newspaper article costs 5,000 KzT, for a total of 6 articles + 3 radio lectures = 45,000 KzT ($368.85)

The base camp currently has a small number of maturing trees surrounding the cabins.  <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has agreed to donate 50 of these trees to seminar attendees to take home with them after the seminar and to plant them in designated, pre-determined areas.  Each tree is currently available / for sale for 1,000 KzT.  50 trees x 1,000 KzT = 50,000 KzT ($409.83).  In-kind donation.

The camera operator has agreed to donate the time needed to edit and create a final product.  The tapes will be edited down into one 7 minutes video showing the whole project, and another 5 minute video will be created showing how to replant.  12 total minutes of film will be created.  According to Ust Kamenogorsk company ‘Leek TV’, one minute of finished film will cost 10,500 KzT.  12 minutes of film x 10,500 = 126,000 KzT ($1,032,79). Моя работа как волонтера Корпуса Мира в Восточном Казахстане в городе Риддере

Я приехал в Казахстан 22 – ого августа, 2006 года. После трех месячного изучения культуры и языка в городе Талгар, не далеко от Алматы, я работал здесь в городе Риддере, расположенного среди гор в Восточном Казахстане, более двух лет не покидая страну. Я считаю Казахстан моим вторым домом. Большая часть моей работы за последние два года была связана с работой в организации « Ак – Кем – Риддер». Организация просила Корпус Мира направить для работы в Риддере волонтера с экологическим образованием. Я недавно закончил университет в штате Оригон, получив диплом управления природными ресурсами из лесного университета города Корвалес штат Оригон. Проекты, созданные более чем за два года, имели целью знакомить и обучать молодежь экологическому образованию, а также развивать эко туризм в горах Западного Алтая. Я помогал строить домики для организации « АК – Кем – Риддер» на Сером Лугу, а также помогал туристам в экологических экскурсиях. Я посадил 500 деревьев на Сером Лугу с надеждой помочь восстановить лес. Я часто приходил в 10 школ и 2 колледжа с беседами об экологии и с целью обучения английскому языку, охватывая 1000 студентов по области. В течение двух лет я знакомил студентов с американской культурой, сравнивая ее с русской и казахской, проводил уроки английского языка в английском клубе три раза в неделю для детей и жителей города. Уроки английского языка были бесплатными, посещаемость круглый год составляла приблизительно 20 человек. Я шесть заездов работал в летнем экологическом лагере в течение 2007, 2008 годов, находившемся на Сером Лугу, работая с 10, 20 детьми в каждом заезде. Я помог организовать очистку вдоль берега реки Ульба и Грамотуха с 50 учениками из школы №17. Я, совместно с моей организацией, проводил уроки по здоровому образу жизни с информационной целью о ВИЧ и СПИД, профилактика наркомании и табакокурения ( как предупредить и обезопасить себя от этой страшной болезни) о чем они раньше не знали. На лекциях присутствовали 650 молодых людей. В 2008 году я помог написать грант USAID для организации « АК – КЕМ – РИДДЕР» по организации ремонта нашего офиса, преобразовав его в новый экологический центр по туризму ( визит центр). Проводил работы с молодежью по безопасному пребыванию на природе – в тайге. В эти проекты было вложено минимум 25 процентов финансирования и 100 процентов на нужды организации и на утверждения. Я жил и работал в Риддере для того, чтобы помочь организации участвовать в реализации этих проектов. Организация обратилась ко мне с целью оказать содействие в этих проектах. КОРПУС МИРА - это организация доброй воли, а также организация по обмену культур. Основная цель волонтера КРПУСА МИРА – это изучать и понимать культуру другой страны. Я осознанно принял решение принять приглашение приехать в Казахстан. Я учил русский язык. Я изучил и понял многое о Казахстане, еще находясь и работая в своей стране. Я изучил и понял Казахстан, установив личные отношения и связи с людьми этой страны. Я ел традиционную еду, жил в казахстанской семье 9 месяцев. Я принимал участие во всех сферах жизни вместе с людьми Восточного Казахстана. Я изучил экологию Алтайских гор, ходил в походы, катался на лыжах вместе с моими лучшими друзьями в самых удивительных местах Алтайских гор. Все это – моя жизнь в Казахстане. Это не каникулы или отпуск для меня. Я здесь жил, чтобы познакомиться поближе со страной, которую я выбрал еще находясь в США, а также, чтобы познакомить людей из Казахстана с культурой, традициями и обычаями моей страны.

И самое главное - я посвятил свою жизнь проблемам экологии, так как люблю очень эту область деятельности. Я принял приглашение приехать в Казахстан, потому что знаю, что Миру нужны партнеры, работающие вместе, чтобы вместе решать проблемы возникающие в мире. Я приехал в Казахстан с одной главной целью – работать с людьми другой страны, которые хотят сделать экологию лучше. Я познакомился с людьми, которые говорили на другом языке и имели другую культуру, но я сразу узнавал, что эти люди работали в « АК – КЕМ – РИДДЕРЕ» судя по их отношению к природе, их взглядам на экологию.

Description of Peace Corps Service for Anthony Kavanaugh Sharp Organizational and Community Assistant Project – Kazakhstan (Central Asia)

Following a competitive application process, Anthony (Tony) K. Sharp was invited into Peace corps service for Kazakhstan in Central Asia.

On August 22, 2006 he entered pre-service training in Talghar, Kazakhstan. Following 10 weeks of intensive technical, cross-cultural, safety and security, and language training. He was sworn-in as a Peace Corps Volunteer on November 11, 2006 and made the commitment to service in Kazakhstan for the next 24 months.

Mr. Sharp worked with the Non-governmental Organization named Ak-Kem-Ridder, and ecological-interest NGO, located in the East Kazakhstan Oblast town of Ridder. The organization specializes in ecological preservation, education and tourism, forest sustainability and restoration of forests.

During his affiliation with Ak-Kem-Ridder, Mr. Sharp completed numerous projects including: Save Your Forest (a tree planning and ecological seminar program) Global Environmental Fund (Collective Video) Clean the Ulba River (six kilometer river bank clean-up project) Idea Wild (compass reading seminars) Grey Meadow (eco-tourism base camp) Other Summer camps HIV/AIDS education Tri-lingual Ridder Museum Display (and translation) Cabin construction (and tee pee building) Tree farming Cross-cultural club English conversation club

Mr. Sharp worked as a Protected Areas Consultant who along with his regular assignments, visited 17 schools and two universities on a monthly basis where he led discussions on ecology, forest health and healthy youth topics. Nearly 200 students a month attended the lectures. He additionally participated in weekend outdoor activities. He helped develop the Grey Meadow eco-tourism base camp with log cabins, trail construction and mapping and a series of seminars on ecological topics.

As part of his work with Ak-Kem-Ridder he was involved in planting and tending tree nearly 500 trees between the ages of one to seven years of age.

Grant Applications=[edit]

Mr. Sharp participated in the drafting of two USAID grant applications – one to fund the teaching residents about the ecology of the Altai Mountain Range and to fund the on-going Save Your Forest tree farm. This grant helped launch the first publication featuring the post-Soviet native Altai tree as well as materials to build a large mobile classroom tee pee. Mr. Sharp also taught project management, monitoring and evaluation and grant writing skills to staff of Ak-Kem-Ridder.

The second successful grant application funded the remodeling of the Ak-Kem-Ridder office which led to the organization becoming the region’s first ecological tourism and visitor center. -Partnerships Mr. Sharp helped create a partnership between Ak-Kem-Ridder and the Idea Wild organization based in Colorado. Idea Wild provided supplies for a forest orientation and environment ethics seminar (including compass and GPS usage). Through partnership with the Global Environmental Fund, Mr. Sharp helped teach youth how to use audio visual equipment (video, digital cameras, microphones, and computer programs). The youth thus trained, interviewed residents and created a video about both the problems and the future of their village (Paperechna on the Russian/Kazakh border). Mr. Sharp’s Russian language skills reached the “intermediate high” proficiency level.

В настоящее время на территории Восточно-Казахстанской области, в городе Риддер идет реализация государственной программы по развитию экологического туризма. Создаются зоны, где прокладываются новые экологотуристические маршруты и экологические тропы, подготавливаются места отдыха, оборудуются стоянки и кемпинги. Налаживается сотрудничество между особо охраняемыми природными территориями, государственными структурами, турфирмами, неправительственными организациями, крестьянскими хозяйствами, школами и ВУЗами. Активно вовлекается в сотрудничество местное население. Население региона самостоятельно разработали сеть прогулочных маршрутов для туристов, выявляются мастера народных промыслов. Однако опрос первых посетителей, первых экотуристов показал, что туристы, въезжая в регион, сталкиваются с проблемой получить подробную информацию о предлагаемых экотуристических услугах, питании, экскурсиях, перечне и стоимости услуг, в каком месте предпочтительнее остановиться и какими услугами воспользоваться. В городе Риддер досуг организован слабо, имеется один музей, хотя история региона богата. К тому же, туристам хотелось бы получить подробную информацию о нашем регионе. Конечно, по ходу выполнения своих обязанностей, местные жители, задействованные в обслуживании туристов, отвечают на интересующие туристов вопросы. Но, чтобы подобные контакты были эффективны, нужно, чтобы персонал был достаточно образованным, умел разговаривать с гостями должным образом, знал правила гостеприимства. Для решения этой проблемы в регионе – в городе Риддер необходимо создать образовательный визит-центр. В таких центрах, как показывает мировая практика, наиболее удачно ведется многопрофильная пропагандистско-просветительская работа с посетителями. Здесь туристы могли бы получить полную информацию о гостевых домах, о местах, которые могут принять туристов, об истории региона, увидеть образцы различных изделий местных мастеров, получить квалифицированное сопровождение членами ОМО ТЭК «Ак-Кем-Риддер» на прогулках по окрестностям и экскурсиях. Сопровождающий покажет туристам именно то, в чем та или иная группа более всего заинтересована. Посетителям могут быть предоставлены брошюры с картами и другой информацией об отдельных участках, которые могут показаться им интересными, и, которые отмечены на местности указательными знаками. Туристы, со своей стороны, должны узнать не только о местных традициях и биоразнообразии на этой территории, но и о том, как природа нуждается в сохранении, как и какие доходы от экотуризма способствуют сохранению биоразнообразия региона. Визит-центр, обеспечивая рынок сбыта и, возобновляя интерес к местным обычаям, будет способствовать сохранению местных обычаев, традиций и прикладного искусства. Кроме того, визит-центр будет проводить различные природоохранные мероприятия: игры, викторины и фестивали, готовить выставки по природным и культурным ресурсам Заповедных лесных территорий, проводить лекции и беседы с посетителями с демонстрацией фотографий, видиофильмов. В визит-центре можно будет получить информацию об объектах и явлениях, труднодоступных для наблюдения на маршруте местах. Работу будут вести члены Эколого-туристского клуба «Ак-Кем-Риддер», и партнеры проекта: члены ЭТК «Ирбис», Государственного Учреждения Западно-Алтайского государственного природного заповедника в прошедшие специальную туристскую подготовку и обучение работы с туристскими группами. У сотрудников визит-центра будет еще одна функция. Это помощь посетителям, совместно с службой ЧС в экстренных случаях: содействие в поиске заблудившихся посетителей, оказание первой медицинской помощи, и т.д. Statement of Need -Background information – Ridder and NGO <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> Ridder is a town in the Eastern Kazakhstan Oblast in Kazakhstan with a population of approximately 60,000 people with a 70 / 25 Russian / Kazakh demographic respectively. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> was registered in 1995, and was re-registered in 2003 due to the name change of the town which was previously called Leninogorsk. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> holds annual summer camps, educates the youth about ecological issues, plants trees, and provides eco-tourist services and education. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is also extremely active in ecological events held in Ridder, including Earth Day, March for Parks, “We Shall Protect Our Fir Trees.” etc. Since 1995, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has been involved in ecological education of the Ridder youth. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> club is based in the town of Ridder, whereas the eco-tourist base camp ‘The Grey Meadow’ is located in the Altai mountain range approximately 30 kilometers north of Ridder. Outdoor recreation, work, and eco-tourism keeps people fit, informed, and binds family and friends. Such an organization and project as <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ will allow the local youth and citizens to be stronger, more social, ecologically educated, and more proactive about issues. -Description of problem and need The tourism industry in Ridder Kazakhstan is booming, however; a booming industry does have problems and opportunities. Currently in Ridder, there are 5 hotels, 8 tourist camps, 1 historical museum (not ecologically educating), 2 downhill ski slopes, 2 ecological NGO’s, and a State ran Nature Preserve 35 kilometers near. In the nearby city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, there are 6 other tourist organizations. The potential of Ridder becoming a major tourist hub of Central Asia is more than possible, although there are problems with the current situation. One problem is that tourists currently do not have any access to reliable information about the tourist opportunities of the Altay. Currently, there is no central tourist office in the area that specializes in tourism and ecological education. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has an ideal office space which is visually awful. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is now ready to remodel that office space and become the central tourist organization in Altay region of Kazakhstan. There is also a problem with the growing disconnect with nature among the inhabitants of the area. This growing disconnect has serious consequences for the future stewardship of their public lands. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is concerned about the ecological health of Kazakhstan. The community of Ridder has specifically demanded more ecological and natural resource education aimed to the youth. It is Youth Eco-Tourist Club <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> duty to answer that call for more ecological education. This increase in ecological education also meets the ‘Green Country 2030’ mandate by Kazakhstan’s Presidential orders. <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> goals are ambitious and serious. The project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ will be the first step in a long-term effort to of educating the citizens and visitors of the East Kazakhstan Oblast about ecology of the area. Despite the obvious need, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> currently lacks some of the necessary equipment, materials and funding to accomplish this task. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is requesting the financial support for a seminar and booklet to teach the community of Ridder on tourism new skills and opportunities. Financial support will also include necessary materials associated with the creation of an eco-tourism hub. The following is a detailed explanation of <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> ecological education program project titled: ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ :

‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’

Goals and Objectives <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking the SPA grant committee for $2,959.28 to help complete the ecological education project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ goals and objectives:

Vision Statement: A beautifully natural Kazakhstan West-Altay region with ecologically educated citizens and tourists. Goal #1: An ecological tourist visitor’s center will be raised in Ridder Kazakhstan. This visitor’s center will display natural artwork and interpret local ecological issues of the East Kazakhstan Oblast. -Objective #1; Remodel club to a professional standard by May 31st 2008. Tasks for remodeling include replacing and painting the floors, wallpapering the walls, installing ceiling tiles, installing ceramic kitchen tiles, installing new windows, and a complete office make-over. -Objective #2; Create the Eco-Hub in the recently remodeled office space providing tourists information of the Altay mountain range and tourist opportunities. This information will be provided through the creation of a small natural museum, books, photos, knowledgeable staff, ecological oriented meetings, guest speakers, ecological classes. The Eco-Hub will also have natural art to display and sell to the community and visiting tourists. The Eco-Hub will be done and ready to be viewed by the public by June 31st 2008. Tasks of this goal include getting a new business meeting table and chairs, building display booths, displaying photos, booklets, books, and informative flyers about the tourist options of the region.

Goal #2: Conduct a seminar teaching local community members (30+) aspects of the tourism industry, building community capacity to handle tourists coming to the area. -Objective #1; Create an informative booklet for seminar attendees. The booklet is very specific to the Altay region, and is designed to answer questions tourists may have about the Altay area. The booklet will educate its readers about aspects of the tourism industry within the local Altay area. The booklet will explain the following to its readers: -The different opportunities for tourism in the area and how to effectively interpret local traditions. -Altay bio-diversity information and its importance. -How to effectively create festivals & exhibits. -How to lecture and demonstrate photographs. -How to educate and keep tourists safe while on tours. -How to teach environmental ethics that are important to keeping the nature pristine in the West Altay. For specifics, view addenda #5 for the booklets table of contents.

The booklet will be supplemental and directly related to the seminar. The booklet will be created using Microsoft Publisher and be printed and ready for the seminar by June 25th 2008. The booklets table of contents can be viewed in addenda #5. The booklet survey to help with the project evaluation can be viewed in addenda #6.

-Objective #2; On the 27th, 28th, 29th of June, 2008, a 3 day seminar at the recently remodeled office will teach local community members (30+) aspects and opportunities of the tourism industry the local Ridder community. The seminar will be taught by <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> Coordinator Natasha Denisova, and three other invited lecturers from organizations in the East Kazakhstan oblast. This seminar will build community capacity to handle tourists visiting the area. The seminar will teach in-depth about the subjects written in the booklet. The post-seminar survey that will help project evaluation can be viewed in addenda #2. A sample seminar day can be viewed in addenda #4. Below describes the booklet that the seminar is based upon. Booklet topics are the same as the seminar topics.

Target Group: The Eco-Hub will target members of the Ridder and East Kazakhstan community. Local, Kazakhstanian, and International tourists will be targeted to visit the West-Altay, with a reliable tourist center upon arrival. Tourists will enjoy the one central location to find all holiday options the East Kazakhstan Oblast has to offer. Ridder community members will benefit with the increase of tourism in the area. Local artists and craftsman will be solicited to sell their natural artwork in the space created. The office will be a venue for both the buyers and sellers to meet in one space. Science teachers and students will have a new venue to learn and display their ideas and knowledge. Teachers will have a new place to take their students to learn about ecological issues of the ‘Roodnum Altay’. Scientists of Kazakhstan will be interested in seeing the interpretation of the East Kazakhstan Oblast. The Ridder citizens will have access to information from the previous work done by the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization. The schools and colleges will especially be targeted and educated of the importance of future ecological planning and management, with an emphasis on sustainability and rational usage. Ultimately, the local environment, and all of the biological inhabitants of the region will benefit from this sustainable oriented ecological visitors center. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will also be asking all local partners, government ran and NGO’s, to help aid in the project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’. This project has two goals: 1: Create an informative ecological tourists hub center. 2: Hold a seminar teaching local community members (30+) about aspects and opportunities in the tourism industry.

This is the project design and list of tasks to be completed beginning with the acceptance of this project by the SPA Grant Committee.

Project Design: The project, ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ is designed by the NGO <<Ak-Kem-Ridder>> in coordination with the greater Ridder community. The town of Ridder (including media, local NGO’s, school’s, colleges, Akimat, government organization, citizens) has expressed a need for more ecological education. This project has been designed to achieve each objective. Management of the project will include three club leaders and a Peace Corps Volunteer (Anthony Sharp). The leaders will see that the project is kept on schedule and carried out as planned. Members of this group are to meet on a bi-weekly basis, at the time of regular club meetings. Progress, concerns, problems, and suggestions are to be discussed at these regular meetings. Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, leaders are to be in consistent contact with the partners mentioned throughout this document to insure an efficient and complete project.

Capacity for <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> to complete project: <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has the educational capacity to complete this project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ and continue the project well into the future. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> already works with local government partners, including the West Altai Nature Preserve, Botanical Garden of Ridder, and other ecological and educational organizations. Furthermore, the project includes many youth volunteers with an interest in increasing their ecological knowledge.

Contingency Plans --Problems that can cause the program significant difficulties are: 1.) Problems remodeling. 2.) No seminar attendees. 3.) No one comes to the visitor’s center.

1.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has researched all projects that will be undertaken upon the start of this project. All volunteer construction workers are capable of all projects and have a history of working on similar projects except for the window installation. Each project is clear and will be finished in the time frame given. The time frame for the completion of these projects is very reasonable. If unforeseen problems will arise, the organization will seek other, more experienced volunteer construction workers. 2.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will contact all people that have previously expressed interest in such a seminar. The 30 potential seminar attendees have already expressed interest and are excited for an exact date of this seminar. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will give continual updates throughout the project period for the invited seminar attendees. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> currently has a list of 30+ people who would be interested in attending such a seminar. These people will all be contacted asap. 3.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has an ambitious advertisement program that will continually update citizens of this visitor’s center. The radio program is sure to let people know about the Eco-Hub. We will invite other modes of local mass media for the grand opening. Ridder is a town full of scientists, tourists, and sportsman with a genuine interest in such ecological projects as Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan. As stated below in the financial section, schools will be scheduled to keep regular people / income coming in throughout the year. Summer is very busy in Ridder with tourism. Tourists will come if interested and properly marketed to.

Financial: The Eco-Hub will charge the fee of 100 KzT per person upon entrance. The Ridder museum receives 500+ visitors a month, over 6,000 people a year. The Eco-Hub plans, with intense marketing, to receive that many visitors or more. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is ready to set up regular school visits, having many different classes visit on a scheduled basis. Schools will be charged with group rates. There are 17 schools in Ridder. With a regular weekly schedule of each ‘form’ from each school, the funds collected will help keep regular income to the Eco-Hub throughout the slower winter months. The Eco-Hub is not entirely based on profits, but also amount of people educated. The Aki-Mat pays for the rent of the office space, while the other utilities of water, heat and electricity are minimal. Beyond the money collected from admission to the Eco-Hub, there will be other items sold. Books, arts, crafts, professional photographs in frames and locally created movies will be sold to the visitors. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> base camp ‘The Grey Meadow’ is also expected to get a boost of tourists because more people will know about the tourist opportunity in the area.

Marketing: <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has always had an intense PR and marketing campaigns. The organization utilizes the multiple media sources. The internet will be utilized on many free postings. The radio air time purchased with spa grant funds will be utilized for marketing. There is a local public access television station ‘Ridder TV’ which will be notified and invited for the opening of Eco-Hub. Newspaper articles will be written.

The project ‘Eco-Hub Ridder Kazakhstan’ has a wonderful future. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continually ecologically educate the people through as many venues as possible. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is an NGO committed to complete this project. Regular meetings at the office in Ridder will ensure a consistent force to continue the project. The Eco-Hub will be a reliable space for all those interested. It will take time to refine the visitors center into the effective center <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> envisions. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continue to seek further partnerships from club members, as well as local, national, and international supporters. Through further partnerships, public or private, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> plans to develop more education and tourist options for citizens. This grant is designed to get <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> started on a large tourism and eco-educated project, with a vision of a beautifully natural Kazakhstan West-Altay region with ecologically educated citizens and tourists.

Projects Alignment with SPA Objectives and Criteria- Fulfilling the measures given by the project will allow an ecological tourism visitor’s center and a community ready to handle the tourists who come and seek. The creation of the Eco-Hub visitor’s center and production of the seminar to teach local community members will effectively increase the tourism, and tourist options of the Ridder area. It is our hypothesis that this summer more tourists will be enticed to visit the beautiful nature that the West-Altay offers, and a population with an in-depth knowledge of tourism, history, tradition, ecology, forests, and trees. Beyond a hypothesis, it is our duty to have an Eco-Hub created, with doors open to educate visitors from far and near by summer of 2008. Budget: All prices have been quoted using 120 KzT = $1.00 USD To view budget, please see attached ‘akkemridderBudget Proposal’ in Microsoft Excel. Justification of Costs: NOTE: DIGITAL PHOTOS HAVE BEEN ATTACHED TO DISPLAY THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE SPACE IN NEED OF REMODELLING. Equipment: No spa grant funds will go to the purchase of equipment. See community contribution section. Food & Transportation / Travel per diem -Seminar coffee break We are asking the SPA grant funds for two coffee breaks each day throughout the 3 day seminar. The coffee break supplies will be for the 30 invited seminar attendees. It has been calculated that it will cost 240 KzT per person per day. Coffee break supplies will cost 240 Kzt per person x 3 days x 30 people = 21,600 KzT. ($180.00) total. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization will give a cash donation totaling 3,600 KzT ($30.00). We are asking that the Spa grant to cover 18,000 KzT ($150.00), <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization covers 3,600 KzT ($30.00) of the total 21,600 KzT ($180.00), leaving the spa grant to cover the remaining 18,000 KzT ($150.00). Labor fees -Professional Window Installation <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking the SPA grant to fund professional window installation. The volunteer construction workers are not capable of installing the new plastic windows. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization has researched a company that agrees to install each window for the price of 6,000 KzT ($50.00) per window. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization already has bought these three windows. The windows professionally installed will cost 18,000 KzT ($150.00) total. Volunteer construction workers will be with the installer to learn methods and skills of such a job. Materials -Construction nails <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for the funds to purchase 2 kilograms of construction nails to be used in the repairing of the office floors. 2 kilograms of heavy duty construction nails costs 600 Kzt ($5.00) total.

-Seminar supplies / kits

<<Ak-Kem Ridder>> would like to have as much information absorbed by all seminar attendees. A kit consisting of a folder, note book paper, pens, and pencils will help those attending the seminar to make note of all important facts observed or learned throughout the seminar. These seminar packets will cost 200 KzT per packet for 30 seminar attendees. 200 KzT per packet x 30 attendee’s will total 6,000 KzT ($50.00). <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization has agreed to contribute 1,000 KzT ($8.33) as a cash donation, and is asking the Spa grant to cover the 5,000 KzT ($41.66) for the seminar kits.

-A large wooden business table <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will use the multi functional table for the seminar and well into the future with the various activities the organization is involved in. This large table is round and seats 30 people at a time. It provides a professional setting for a meeting of many people. These meetings will allow many people at once to describe all environmental issues. The table is also unique by the fact that it easily comes apart into 20 separate desks. This table will be able to turn one room into either a classroom or round table business discussion room. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will utilize both of these functions for the consistent meetings and ecological classes that will be held in this office space. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking that the Spa grant cover the price of the 50,000 KzT ($416.66) business table.

-Wooden Chairs Wooden chairs will match the wooden business table. They fit the double uses of the table and are appropriate and professional. 30 chairs is the maximum number of chairs that can fit around this large business table. Each chair costs 2,000 KzT ($16.66). 30 chairs will cost 60,000 KzT ($500.00) total.

-Wallpaper The corridor and room of the Eco-Hub need wallpaper. Currently the walls are not at the desired professional standard and need to be re-wallpapered. The area in need of this remodeling (main office space) covers a total area of 80 meters squared. 15 rolls of wallpaper have been calculated to cover the area in need of remodeling. Each roll of wallpaper costs 1,000 KzT ($8.33). 15 rolls of wallpaper will cost 15,000 KzT ($125.00) total. Wall papering will be part of the volunteer construction workers project.

-Wallpaper glue Wallpaper glue is also a necessary expense to adequately keep the wallpaper on the walls. 2 boxes of wallpaper glue will cover the back of 15 rolls of wallpaper. Each box of glue costs 1,000 KzT ($8.33). The 2 asked boxes of wallpaper glue will cost 2,000 KzT ($16.66) total.

-Photographs Local digital and film developing company Kodak charges 150 KzT ($1.25) for display sized 15x20 laminated photographs. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will have 60 photographs showing the beautiful sights and nature of the area ready to display and sell when the Eco-Hub is opened. The toal cost of these 60 laminated photographs is 9,000 KzT ($75.00). <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will pay for 20 photographs costing 3,000 KzT ($25.00) a cash contribution, while asking the Spa committee to fund 40 photographs costing 6,000 Kzt ($50.00) total.

-Floor Planks The current status of <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> office floors are awful. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization is requesting the Spa grant to disburse 15,000 KzT ($125.00) for a half of a cube of wood planks. The new floors will be part of the volunteer construction workers project.

-Paint The current status of the <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> office floors are visually awful. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization is requesting the Spa grant to disburse 7,200 KzT ($60.00) for 24.3 kilograms of ‘Kracteecha’ paint. This paint will be utilized by the volunteer construction workers to paint the floors. Each bucket of 2.7 kilograms paint costs 800 KzT ($6.66).

-Celing tiles <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization is asking the spa committee to disburse funds for Styrofoam ceiling tiles. The concrete building holds an echo that the Styrofoam celing tiles will limit. Each ceiling tile costs 200 KzT ($1.66). It has been calculated that 300 ceiling tiles will be needed to cover the entire office space. 200 KzT x 300 ceiling tiles will cost 60,000 ($500.00) total.

-Ceramic tiles <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization is asking the spa committee to disburse funds for ceramic kitchen tiles. The office has a kitchen in the back and is in need of remodeling. The ceramic tiles cost 2,000 KzT ($16.66) per square meter. The kitchen area in need of these tiles is calculated at 30 square meters. 2,000 KzT x 30 meters will cost 60,000 KzT ($500.00) total. This will be enough ceramic tiles to cover the entire room.

-Printer Cartridges Utilizing the office computer and printer, printer cartridges are necessary to print the educational booklet that coincides with the seminar. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking the Spa grant committee to fund the purchase of 3 printer cartridges for the Canon MF3228. Each printer cartridge costs 6,000 KzT ($50.00). The purchase of 3 printer cartridges will costs 18,000 Kzt ($150.00) total. ­ -Printer Paper <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking Spa grant committee to grant funds for the purchase of 3 blocks of printer paper. The paper will be used to print the booklet that aids in the seminars success. Each block costs 600 KzT ($5.00). The 3 blocks of paper will cost 1,800 KzT ($15.00) total. Transportation of Materials:

The Eco-Hub remodeling project deals with an incredible amount of materials that need to be shipped directly to the office. The 30 chairs and large table, along with the tiles, floor planks, and wallpaper are all items that need vehicular support to arrive at the office when needed. It is estimated that the number of trips that need to be taken is 24. A standard taxi in Ridder costs 250 – 300 KzT, however; it is necessary to have a van with the cargo space available to ship this large and bulky items more economically. A taxi (van) costs 500 KzT ($4.16) every trip. 24 trips will cost 12,000 KzT ($100.00) total. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization has agreed to pay for half of these trips, paying 6,000 Kzt ($50.00) for the transportation of materials a cash contribution. The other half of the transportation of materials is asked for Spa to cover: 6,000 KzT ($50.00).

Other: Radio programs <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for funds to have ecological topics to be available for the entire community, open for discussion, as well as an opportunity to advertise the new Eco-Hub. The radio air time will serve as a way to pass this ecological information on to the community. There will be one 30 minute radio program aired in June of 2008. This radio program will discuss the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> Eco-Hub grand opening, as well as issues about the organizations tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc. The radio program is a very effective way to reach the most people, spreading the word of ecology on a local basis. The discussion will be local listeners calling to give their opinion and to ask questions. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organizations coordinator Natasha Denisova will be the featured guests, as she is a specialist about ecological issues pertaining to the Altay region of Kazakhstan. The radio program will be aired on radio channel ‘Maksat’ with a minimum listener audience of 25,000+ citizens. The radio program will costs 9,000 KzT ($75.00) total.

Description of Community contribution

-Windows <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has purchased high quality, functional plastic windows to be installed in the office space. 3 windows, 170 x 130 centimeters are much more effective than the current glass windows at the office. These windows open vertically and horizontally. They are more economical due to the modern insulation and will keep the office warm in the winter, which is a current problem. Each window cost 35,000 KzT ($291.66). The 3 windows cost the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization a total of 105,000 KzT ($875.00) as a cash contribution. -Volunteer construction workers <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is a youth organization staffed by local volunteers. The volunteers do not expect to be paid for their work, as they are devoted to the future of this organization. For the sake of having their hard work noticed, it was calculated that 3 volunteer construction workers working part time of the course of a month would have a salary of approximately 9,600 KzT ($80.00) per month. The construction and remodeling of the club is expected to last 2 months. This would add up to be a community contribution of 3 people x 2 months at 9,600 KzT = 57,600 KzT ($240.00) in-kind donation. -Seminar Kits <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> would like to have as much information absorbed by all seminar attendees. A kit of a packet, note book paper, pens, and pencils will help those attending the seminar to make note of all important facts observed or learned throughout the seminar. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> organization has agreed to contribute 1,000 KzT ($8.33) in the form of markers and folders. -Photographs Local digital and film developing company Kodak charges 150 KzT ($1.25) for display sized 15x20 laminated. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will contribute 20 photographs costing 3,000 KzT ($25.00) while asking the Spa committee to fund 40 photographs costing 6,000 Kzt ($50.00). -Equipment <<Akk-Kem Ridder>> organization is prepared to make an in-kind contribution of 4,800 KzT ($39.98) for the various tools that will be necessary to the completion of the remodeling project of the office. The equipment of the in-kind contribution consist of 4 putty knives costing a total of 800 KzT ($6.66), 2 hammers costing a total of 800 KzT ($6.66), and 8 paint brushes costing a total of 3,200 KzT ($26.66). Cash contribution. Monitoring and Evaluation (one page max.) Monitoring for the project will be primarily the responsibility of the team leaders throughout the life of this project. Regular weekly meetings will ensure that the project moves along as scheduled as well as give us an opportunity to discuss new ideas and respond to problems that arise. The previously mentioned project action plan has clearly defined tasks that will be used as markers of success. Peace Corps Volunteer Tony Sharp will be training the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> staff monitoring and evaluation skills and survey writing skills to continue with Eco-Hub and other ecological education programs in the future projects of this organization.

The community has identified a serious deforestation issue in the area surrounding Ridder BKO KZ. Educating the community is the primary method to help the current deforestation problem. Re-planting a forest is not the solution if the citizens are unaware of proper stewardship methods. Deforestation causes considerable degradation to the land. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is thoroughly engaged with local environmental issues of land use and water quality, including cooperation with local organizations such as the West-Altai Nature Preserve, and the Botanical Garden of Ridder. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has a goal to begin an aggressive educational campaign for the local community aimed to inform the public about the ecology of the area, with special interests concentrated on the trees and forested land in the Ridder area.

As a protected areas volunteer, I have realized and comprehended the dire need of an ecological education campaign in this area. The land here is suffering due to poor management. Current logging practices (both legal and illegal) are unsustainable and environmentally catastrophic. This project will educate the general public about the importance of a healthy, natural forest. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> knows that the first step to battle deforestation is through an ecological education program. This project has two goals which will be fulfilled. The first is to conduct a three day seminar at the eco-tour base camp on how to plant trees and seeds. The second goal is to conduct an environmental education campaign to increase the general knowledge of the population of Ridder and the oblast of ecological problems in the area.

I will help my organization achieve their mission in four of the six priority indicators: Resources and equipment (hand tools) will be purchased and will be used in the seminar, as well as in the future for more tree and seed planting efforts. Tools will also be needed to maintain the income generating Canadian Blue Spruce (reference next indicator).

Income generation will occur as 200 grams of specialty seed (Canadian Blue Spruce) will be grown harvested and sold. This exotic tree is in high demand for purchase with the local residents of this area for decorational purposes. These trees will be for sale, not to be used for any re-forestation practices in the future.

Training will take place at the seminar, as there will be 20 seminar attendees obtaining a new skill of how to plant trees and seeds. Schools, colleges, and universities will also benefit, as lectures are to be given.

The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> NGO will be developed as the equipment will aid in future activities, as well as a consistent selling of the specialty trees (mentioned above) to become a sustainable business. The NGO will develop as more people are involved in outdoor activities and projects (increased tourist population).

This project directly contributes to my assignment as a protected areas volunteer, as I, and my host organization, are protecting the ecology of the local area and educating the local community in the most effective way available.

1)Create and print an informative booklet for the seminar, presentations, and other informative purposes to be used in the future. The booklet will describe the process of the planting a nursery, a tree, and a seed.

2)A wig wam cover will be created for a classroom setting at the seminar. The <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> club volunteers will sew and create the wig-wam cover. The wig-wam cover will be completed by July 15th 2007. A wig-wam will provide a large shelter in the case of poor weather.

3)A 3 day seminar at the site of planting on August 11th, 12th, and 13th 2007. The seminar will show in person what the booklet can only describe. The seminar will teach in-depth techniques on how to begin a nursery, plant a tree and a seed.

4)Plant seeds and trans-plant trees. Seeds (Native Kidder, Siberian Fir, and Canadian Blue Spruce) will be planted on 15 linear meters at the base camp. The Native Kidder and Siberian Fir are local / native trees. The Canadian Blue Spruce is an exotic tree not intended for planting in a natural setting; rather, the Canadian Blue Spruce is to be harvested and sold to the citizens of Ridder for decorational purposes. 50 donated (in-kind expense), currently maturing trees at the base camp will be trans-planted from the base camp to areas surrounding and within the town of Ridder after the seminar. Seminar attendees will have growing trees to take home with them and transplant. Seminar attendees will be able to have a holistic understanding of the early stages of seed / tree plantation and development, as well as the importance of re-forestation (the bigger picture) and a better knowledge of ecology.

5)Two videos will be made. Throughout the entirety of the project, photos and filming of events will be made of all major activities, meetings, and projects. A professional camera operator will be filming all major events of this project. One video will be a general movie, the second will be more technical. The films will be used for future lectures. The videos will be a montage of all of the steps necessary to re-create such a tree re-plantation project. One club volunteer will be an aid to the camera operator, learning a new skill.

6)Over the course of six months, a total of six articles written in the local Ridder newspaper ‘Leninogorsk Pravda’ discussing the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc. Articles are to be written with the latest news and events of the area. Articles will come out every month, starting in June through November 2007.

7)Three radio lectures are to be broadcasted on local Radio station affiliate ‘Europe Plus’ and other radio stations of the area in July, August, and September 2007. Radio lectures are to be 7 – 10 minutes long and played at 17:00. These lectures will also be recorded onto audio cassettes and distributed to local transportation. Bus’s and taxi’s will be asked to re-play these programs for their passengers. Radio lectures are to be about the latest ecological news and events of the area.

8)Lectures will be given at the local schools, colleges, and university, as the most effective way of spreading the news of ecological education to the youth of Ridder. Educating the youth about the environment is <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> primary goal. Lectures to the youth educating There is currently no set ecological curriculum being taught to the youth of Ridder. 5+ schools, and the Ridder Technical College are to have lectures. Lectures given outside of Ridder will be planned as time allows. Lectures will begin once school is in session, September, October, November 2007.

All of the seminar attendees will gain a new capacity to respect and understand a part of nature that may otherwise be ignored. Seminar attendees will obtain a new skill of planting a nursery, a tree, and a seed. The seminar attendees, as well as all community members who listen and / or read the other sources of information through radio and newspaper lectures will benefit from gaining knowledge in the sphere of environmental education. Visitation to schools, colleges, and universities are important to educate the youth.

With the educational campaign, the local community will receive a better understanding of natural resources, and an effectively sustainable way to use those renewable resources. The skill of respecting and sustainably utilizing natural resources ought to be a top priority of all societies, as societies are based on natural resources. This project will teach more than how to plant just a tree, but to realize how important just one tree is.

This project will help all club members and staff members of <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> become better equipped for future projects. Financial sustainability will come from the planting of the Canadian Blue Spruce, as it is an exotic species for decorative purposes. Grant writing skills and project design and management have been passed on to <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> members and staff through this current grant writing process. This has occurred through a Project Design and Management workshop, and various meetings going over all aspects of the grant written. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will now look at ideas in a new light, as planning, writing, and realistic expectations are skills that have been gained.

Knowledge is sustainable! It’s also true that trees and forestry practices are one of the very few re-newable resources this world has to offer, especially when managed correctly. Ridder will be a society with ecologically knowledgeable people able plant trees, as well as a society that respects and understands the importance of that action. The surrounding area of Ridder will become a beautifully sustainable biologically diverse forest, with an ecologically conscious society benefiting all who seek nature. The local community will have access to educational materials that will be used well into the future. Seminar attendees will be encouraged to pass their new skill on to others. The local population will have an overall general knowledge in the sphere of ecology. With ecological knowledge comes an ecological respect.

The financial support from the SPA grant will allow <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> to purchase necessary gardening and horticulture equipment that will help the tree nursery become more sustainable for future tree generations planned to be planted. Tools purchased in this grant will allow more tree projects to occur, in concurrence with the financial gains by selling the decorative Spruce tree.

The purchase of the printer will allow <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> to sustainably produce the booklet and other informative documents for many more events well into the future. Financial matters aside, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> believes the best way to have a sustainable project is have the seminar attendees teach the community what they have learned. In order to have this knowledge sustained, the seven biology students that have attended the seminar will write the September 2007 article in the ‘Leninogorsk Pravda’ newspaper. To be a young published biology student (scientist), teaching the community is an incredible opportunity for these young excelling students. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will offer a few excellent students a glimpse into the possible future of the scientific world, with early published work and experience. On an ecological note, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is committed to increase outdoor recreation, eco-tourism, and public awareness, as the organization creates a home-grown constituency for sustainable forest management.

On an ecological worldly note, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> committed to reducing gross CO2 emissions to help slow global warming, but also to increase CO2 uptake by plant communities in the region. The fight against global warming is best exemplified by <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> project, ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’; a plan to teach how to increase and naturalize vegetation in the Eastern Kazakhstan Oblast. The local, regional, and global biological community will benefit.

The summer is a very busy time in general for this club, with other activities and eco-tourism. So far, this project has brought the club together, with increased meetings throughout the winter months. I attended a project design and management seminar with my local partner. In the future, all club members have a much better idea of the steps involved in realizing a plan. how will you know? ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest And Keep it Alive’ Goals and Objectives <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking the SPA grant committee for $2,936.93 to help complete the ecological education project ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’ goals and objectives: Goal #1: Conduct a 3 day seminar at the eco-tourism base camp teaching 20 citizens how to plant and take care of trees and seeds. -Objective #1; Create and print an informative booklet for the seminar, presentations, and other informative purposes to be used in the future. The booklet will describe the process of the planting a nursery, a tree, and a seed. Refer to addenda to see a table of contents showing the planned topics to be written. -Objective #2; A 3 day seminar at the site of planting on August 11th, 12th, and 13th 2007. The seminar will relate to the booklet created in objective #1. The seminar will teach in-depth techniques on how to begin a nursery, plant a tree and a seed. Seminar attendees will be able to have a holistic understanding of the early stages of seed / tree plantation and development, as well as the importance of re-forestation (the bigger picture) and a better knowledge of ecology. Lectures are to be about the latest ecological news and events of the area. -Objective #3; Lectures are to be given to schools, colleges, and universities as time allows throughout the entirety of the project. Lectures will be given at the local schools, colleges, and university, as the most effective way of spreading the news of ecological education. Target Group: This project has the potential to have a very big impact for everyone in the East Kazakhstan Oblast. All will benefit from a healthy natural surrounding. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has a plan to invite the interested and active biology teachers, biology students recommended by the selected biology teachers and orphans from the local orphanage. Seven biology teachers, seven biology students, and six orphans, totaling 20 seminar attendees. Other citizens will have access to information, as we will be raising awareness about forestry issues through radio, newspapers, lectures and movies. Booklets will be available, as well as information left on CD-ROM at the lecture halls. The youth especially is to be targeted and educated of the importance of future forest planning and management, with an emphasis on sustainability and rational usage. We will do this through regular classroom visitation at local schools, colleges, and universities. Ultimately, the local environment, and all of the biological inhabitants of the region will benefit from this sustainable oriented forest re-plantation project. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will also be asking all local partners, government ran and NGO’s, to help aid in the project ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’. The project seeks to increase the ecological education level of the citizens in the area around the town of Ridder. This is the list of tasks to be completed beginning with the acceptance of this project by the SPA Grant Committee

Project Design: The project, ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’ was designed by the NGO <<Ak-Kem-Ridder>> in coordination with the greater Ridder community. The town of Ridder (including media, local NGO’s, school’s, colleges, Akimat, government organization, citizens) has expressed a need for more ecological education. This project has been designed to achieve each objective. Management of the project will include four club leaders and a Peace Corps volunteer (myself). The leaders will see that the project is kept on schedule and carried out as planned. Members of this group are to meet on a bi-weekly basis, at the time of regular club meetings. Progress, concerns, problems, and suggestions are to be discussed at these regular meetings. Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, leaders are to be in consistent contact with the partners mentioned throughout this document to insure an efficient and complete project. The final product of this project will be community set on ‘planting their own forest and keeping it alive’.


Capacity for <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> to complete project: <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has the educational capacity to complete this project ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’ and continue the project well into the future. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> already works with local government partners, including the West Altai Nature Preserve, Botanical Garden of Ridder, and other ecological and horticultural organizations. Furthermore, the project includes many youth volunteers with an interest in increasing their ecological knowledge and forested lands around their home.


Contingency Plans --Problems that can cause the program significant difficulties are: 1.) The weather may interrupt the seminar. 2.) No time or availability for lectures at schools. 3.) Orphanage availability.

1.) It is accepted that weather is uncontrollable. The organization is familiar with weather related problems, that is why we have planned enough time in order to complete projects on time. Research will be done for methods of coping with unexpected weather that may effect the seeds and trees. We will also notify the seminar attendees that if there is poor weather to be expected, to leave the following two weekends open for the seminar. 2.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continually call for updates on schedule changes at for the time slots available for lectures. We will have a schedule and follow up. 3.) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continually update and have a working communication with the orphanage. We are to monitor their schedule and make changes as needed.

The project ‘Let’s Plant Our Own Forest and Keep it Alive’ is in its infancy. <<Ak-Kem Ridder has future plans in the sphere of re-forestation, and is a NGO committed to complete this project. Regular meetings at the office in Ridder will ensure a consistent force to continue the project. Continual watering and maintenance and the nursery will be necessary. The trees planted this year will need to grow for three years before transplantation can take place. This program is only the beginning of a sustainable project designed to re-plant the land in the East Kazakhstan Oblast. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will continue to seek out financial assistance from club members, as well as local, national, and international supporters. Seeds are to be planted every summer for many years to come. Once the trees have developed over the course of three years, a new goal will emerge. The future goal will be to transplant the maturing trees into the noted areas in need of forest re-plantation. Through further sponsorship, public or private, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> plans to develop more education options for citizens, and a more intense forest re-plantation effort. This grant is designed to get <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> started on a very long project, with a vision of a beautifully natural sustainable forest throughout the East Kazakhstan Oblast with an ecologically educated population.

Projects Alignment with SPA Objectives and Criteria-

Fulfilling the measures given by the project will allow partial stabilization of the situation in the sphere of protection and reproduction of forest.  The rational usage and creation of the program will effectively increase the area of forested land in the region.  It is our hypothesis that after this summer, the population of Ridder will have a better general knowledge of ecology, forests, and trees.  Beyond a hypothesis, it is our duty to have germinated and growing tree seedlings in the soil near the eco-tour base camp Grey Meadow, with a tangible forest re-plantation project underway.

Justification of Cost:

Equipment:

-Tools All the tools (shovels, rakes, hoes, gloves, buckets, shearers, watering cans, nails, hammers, saws, axe’s) are all completely necessary to begin and sustain a tree nursery near the eco-tourist base camp of <<Ak-Kem Ridder>>. We need all the tools described in the budget to prep soil, trans-plant trees, plant seeds, tend the growing trees…etc. All of the items mentioned above, and on the budget are completely sustainable, and needed for long term work involved in keeping the trees growing 65,840– All hand tools ($539.67) All hand tools purchased by SPA grant fund will be kept at the <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> eco-tourism base camp in a locking attic above the wood shed. There is at all times a care taker of the base camp who acts as a tourist host, as well as a security guard. This care taker is aware of the security issues associated with all equipment on the base camp grounds.

-First Aid Kit <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> realizes that there is an inherent risk of personal injury to volunteers, seminar attendees, staff members, tourists...etc. We will be working with hand tools out in the field. The risk of personal injury is great enough to justify the first-aid kit to minimize greater injury that could be caused without necessary first response supplies. All staff members have had training in first response aid. The base camp is well over 30 kilometers from the nearest place of medical support. It is imperative for the SPA grant to provide funding for a kit of proper equipment available in the case of any minor incident or major emergency. The price of the First aid kit is 5,000 KZT ($40.98)

-CD-Roms <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for the funds to purchase forty (40) CD-R’s and three (3) CD-RW’s to make digital copies of the booklet, seminar information, the videos, and other ecological information. These discs are to be left as reference material when <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> goes to the various schools, colleges, and universities in the area. It is important to leave information with these places when the need for a more in-depth research arises. The price of one CD-R is 120 KZT, 40 CD-R’s is 4,800 KZT ($39.34). The price of a CD-RW is 350 KZT, and the price of 3 CD-RW’s is 1,050 KZT ($8.61)

-Tapes (audio and video) <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is also asking the SPA grant to provide funds for four (4) 8mm video cassettes to supply the video camera operator, and ten (10) audio cassette tapes. 8mm video tapes cost 800 KZT each, 4 tapes will cost 3,200 KZT ($26.23). The original 8mm films will be retrieved after the editing process. Audio cassette tapes cost 200 KZT, and 10 audio tapes will cost 2,000 KZT ($16.39). The ten (10) audio cassette tapes will record the radio lectures and be saved for later use, as well as to be distributed to local bus and taxi drivers. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>>> staff will ask the drivers to re-play the informative lectures for their passengers for an increased amount of air time and an opportunity for the public to be informed.

-Printer, cartridges, and paper The cost of having a booklet printed through a private printing house company titled ‘Profit’ in Ust Kamenogorsk would cost a total of 30,000 KZT (1,000 booklets at 30 KZT each). With that in mind, along with <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> desire to be a more sustainable organization, we researched the cost of a multi-purpose printer (scanner / copier) at the ‘Electronics’ electronic store in Ust-Kamenogorsk to cost 29,990 KZT ($245.82). Black ink cartridge costs 2,500 each. Four black cartridges are to cost a total of 10,000 Kzt ($81.96). One color ink cartridge will be needed to print the color photos in the booklet. One color ink cartridge costs 8,000 KzT ($65.50) A block of paper consisting 500 pieces of paper costs 600 KzT. Five blocks are to be needed totaling 3,000 KzT ($24.59). The total cost of printing these booklets will costs 50,990 KzT ($417.95). There is also a local Ridder company ‘Compas’ that provides repair services of all computer related equipment. We are asking the SPA grant committee to realize our desire to be a more sustainable organization, and realize the long term amount of money to be saved with the single cost of a printer. The printer will be attached to <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> computer in the club office. The club office has a functioning lock already, and is only opened for members and volunteers when a staff member (or Peace Corps volunteer) is in the office. Staff members are already aware of security issues, and secure the existing equipment in the office with care.

Food & Transportation / Travel per diem

-Seminar We are asking the SPA grant funds to transport and feed seminar attendees. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has already agreed to lodge and host seminar attendees on the eco-tourism base camp grounds. The SPA grant fund will purchase transportation and food for the twenty (20) seminar attendees that will be invited. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has researched local Ridder travel company ‘Chp Ospanov’ and is asking the SPA grant to fund round trip transportations costing 40,000 KzT ($327.87).

Food will cost 348 Kzt per person per day. 20 people for 3 days will total 20,880 KzT ($171.15). The total asking amount will be 40,000 KzT ($327.87) + 20,880 KzT (171.15) = 60,880 KzT ($499.02).

Labor fees -Video Camera Operator <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is also asking the SPA grant to fund a professional video camera operator for all major events. The camera operator will come to major events, including the tractor plowing, volunteer planting at the base camp, wig-wam sewing and work, the three seminar days. A club volunteer will be elected to assist the camera operator, learning the methods and skills of such a job. According to Ust Kamenogorsk company “Leek TV” the filming of such operations will cost 2,000 KzT per minute of finished video. There will be a total of 12 minutes of professionally edited film making the total price of filming 24,000 KzT ($196.72). A local camera operator has agreed to work for that same price. The two movies to be made for future information and lecture use.

Materials

-Wig wam fabric <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for the funds to purchase a strong fabric material to create a classroom setting (wig wam) for those attending the seminar, plus other activities and events at the base camp. A wig wam is preferred in this environment instead of a yurt, due to the heavy amount of snowfall. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> already has posts ready for the wig wam. In the past, the wig-wam was covered using a plastic tarp. Needless to say, the low quality tarp could not stand up to the elements associated with the region. The funds would be used to purchase a high quality canvas like material that will need to be sewn for a sturdy classroom. The cabins currently at the base camp are much too small to teach 20+ people at the same time. In the case of poor weather, the wig wam will serve as a warming and lunch room to get out of poor weather. Models have been designed, and 150 meters squared of this fabric would be enough to make a proper cover for the classroom. The material costs 400 KzT per square meter, totaling 60,000 KzT ($491.80).

-Seminar supplies <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> would like to have as much information absorbed by all seminar attendees. A kit of a packet, note book paper, pens, and pencils will help those attending the seminar to make note of all important facts observed or learned throughout the seminar. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> asks funds for this seminar packet, costing 100 KZT per packet, for twenty (20) seminar attendees, totaling 2,000 KZT ($16.39)

-Seminar teaching supplies For an appropriate classroom setting in the wig wam, we are asking the SPA Grant Committee supply funds for tape, flip charts, and markers. Seminar teaching supplies are to total 2,000 KzT ($16.39).

-Seeds According to ‘Справочник Лесничего’ (Spravochnek Leshechevo) Moscow 1980, a book specializing in tree and seed planting, along with <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> staff member Natasha Denisova (diploma attached) the mentioned seeds are to be purchased according to the following weights. It is a common forestry practice to order the double amount of seeds due to the near 50% failure rate within the first planting. Both of the native trees (Siberian Fir and Native Kidder) are to be bought from Ridder's local forestry agency. 1 kilogram of Native Kidder seeds for 20,000 KzT ($163.93) and 200 grams of Siberian Fir seeds for 4,000 KzT ($32.79). The specialty decorative Canadian Blue Spruce is to be bought from a specialty arboretum in Issyk. The only seller in Kazakhstan for this species, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> seeks to gain more financial security producing such a sought after tree. 200 grams of Canadian Blue Spruce seeds are needed, costing 4,000 KzT ($32.79). Seeds for the Canadian Blue Spruce is an important income generating activity that will be undertaken by the NGO for future sustainability.

Other: Radio and newspaper education <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is asking for funds to have ecological topics to be available for the entire community, open for discussion. Both the radio and newspaper space will serve as a way to pass this ecological information on to the community. As previously discussed, there will be a total of six articles written in the local Ridder newspaper. These articles will be printed each month, June – November 2007. Articles are to be written discussing the <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> tree re-plantation program, local ecological problems, local forestry projects, environmental education, local ecological events for the public... etc. There will also be radio programs that will describe <<Ak-Kem Ridder’s>> forestry re-plantation project, other local forestry and ecological education projects. Three total radio programs are to be aired in July, August, and September 2007. These sources of mass media will be the most effective way to reach the most amount of people, spreading the word of ecology on a local basis. Each radio lecture and newspaper article costs 5,000 KzT, for a total of 6 articles + 3 radio lectures = 45,000 KzT ($368.85)

Description of Community contribution Donation of trees The base camp currently has a small number of maturing trees surrounding the cabins. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> has agreed to donate 50 of these trees to seminar attendees to take home with them after the seminar and to plant them in designated, pre-determined areas. Each tree is currently available / for sale for 1,000 KzT. 50 trees x 1,000 KzT = 50,000 KzT ($409.83). In-kind donation.

Video editing The camera operator has agreed to donate the time needed to edit and create a final product. The tapes will be edited down into one 7 minutes video showing the whole project, and another 5 minute video will be created showing how to replant. 12 total minutes of film will be created. According to Ust Kamenogorsk company ‘Leek TV’, one minute of finished film will cost 10,500 KzT. 12 minutes of film x 10,500 = 126,000 KzT ($1,032,79). In-kind donation.

Lodging <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> is providing the lodging of seminar attendees for the three days as a community contribution. Attendees will be supplied with tents and / or cabins. Lodging for twenty seminar attendees for three days at 250 KzT per day will be a total of 15,000 KzT ($122.95) In-kind donation. Monitoring and Evaluation (one page max.) Monitoring for the project will be primarily the responsibility of the team leaders throughout the life of this project. Regular weekly meetings will ensure that the project moves along as scheduled as well as give us an opportunity to discuss new ideas and respond to problems that arise. The previously mentioned project action plan has clearly defined tasks that will be used as markers of success.


Indicator: Who & When? Tools Quality and knowledge gained at seminar. After seminar, seminar staff will issue a survey. Survey attached to addenda #2.

Daily monitoring of the seminar. Staff members encouragement, after each day of the seminar. A ‘likes and dislikes’ board. Sticky note paper provided. We will talk about the ‘likes and dislikes’ in the next morning after reviewing them at the end of the day. Quality of booklet. Before and after printing, Nina and Natasha. Before printing, <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> will consult with partner organizations West Altai Nature Preserve and the Botanical Garden for accuracy of booklet material. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> staff or volunteer after newspaper articles and radio lectures. After each newspaper article and radio lecture aired, a drop box will be located at the Lenin Street market mid-day for 2+ hours on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The drop box comment survey is attached to the addenda #3. The information taken from the surveys will be utilized and geared to the next radio airing and newspaper article. Existence of radio programs Given dates, Natasha. Each radio lecture is to be written, recorded, aired, and recorded off the radio on to a cassette tape. The recordings of all three radio programs will prove the completion of the radio lecture objective. Existence of newspaper articles Given dates, Natasha. Each newspaper article is to be written, printed and purchased. Purchasing the six newspaper articles will prove the completion of newspaper article objective. Existence of wig wam Before the seminar by staff members. Wig wam sewn and constructed and used at the seminar. The use of the wig wam within the dates of the seminar will prove that the wig wam objective is complete. Existence of two movies December 2007, Denisova Events will be filmed. The film will be edited down in to two finished videos. The existence and playing of these videos are to prove the two informational video obj.ective to be complete.

The total project evaluation will take place in December 2007, at the completion. <<Ak-Kem Ridder>> volunteers and staff will evaluate the project based upon successes in completing our proposed objectives, as well as progress made toward our long-term goal. Problems will be noted and remembered for future work, as well as the response to these problems should they occur. A formal write-up will be done and presented to the community through lectures and the final newspaper article.

Anthony Sharp в период с 2006 по 2008 год работал в ОМО «ТЭК «Ак-Кем-Риддер» как волонтер – доброволец Корпуса Мира США в Казахстане. За время работы в организации способствовал успешной реализации многих социально-значимых проектов по туризму, образованию, бизнесу, стратегическому планированию, экологии, сохранению биоразнообразия. В течение двух лет работы в ОМО «ТЭК «Ак-Кем-Риддер» Энтони вел работу с населением города по обучению английскому языку, обмену традициями и культурами между казахским и американским народом. Энтони Шарп зарекомендовал себя как ответственный, пунктуальный, грамотный, коммуникабельный работник, стратег. За 2 года пребывания в Республике Казахстан хорошо овладел письменным русским языком и устной речью. Смог достойно представить американский народ, его культуру, развитие, традиции.

Моя работа как волонтера Корпуса Мира в Восточном Казахстане в городе Риддере

Я приехал в Казахстан 22 – ого августа, 2006 года. После трех месячного изучения культуры и языка в городе Талгар, не далеко от Алматы, я работал здесь в городе Риддере, расположенного среди гор в Восточном Казахстане, более двух лет не покидая страну. Я считаю Казахстан моим вторым домом. Большая часть моей работы за последние два года была связана с работой в организации « Ак – Кем – Риддер». Организация просила Корпус Мира направить для работы в Риддере волонтера с экологическим образованием. Я недавно закончил университет в штате Оригон, получив диплом управления природными ресурсами из лесного университета города Корвалес штат Оригон. Проекты, созданные более чем за два года, имели целью знакомить и обучать молодежь экологическому образованию, а также развивать эко туризм в горах Западного Алтая. Я помогал строить домики для организации « АК – Кем – Риддер» на Сером Лугу, а также помогал туристам в экологических экскурсиях. Я посадил 500 деревьев на Сером Лугу с надеждой помочь восстановить лес. Я часто приходил в 10 школ и 2 колледжа с беседами об экологии и с целью обучения английскому языку, охватывая 1000 студентов по области. В течение двух лет я знакомил студентов с американской культурой, сравнивая ее с русской и казахской, проводил уроки английского языка в английском клубе три раза в неделю для детей и жителей города. Уроки английского языка были бесплатными, посещаемость круглый год составляла приблизительно 20 человек. Я шесть заездов работал в летнем экологическом лагере в течение 2007, 2008 годов, находившемся на Сером Лугу, работая с 10, 20 детьми в каждом заезде. Я помог организовать очистку вдоль берега реки Ульба и Грамотуха с 50 учениками из школы №17. Я, совместно с моей организацией, проводил уроки по здоровому образу жизни с информационной целью о ВИЧ и СПИД, профилактика наркомании и табакокурения ( как предупредить и обезопасить себя от этой страшной болезни) о чем они раньше не знали. На лекциях присутствовали 650 молодых людей. В 2008 году я помог написать грант USAID для организации « АК – КЕМ – РИДДЕР» по организации ремонта нашего офиса, преобразовав его в новый экологический центр по туризму ( визит центр). Проводил работы с молодежью по безопасному пребыванию на природе – в тайге. В эти проекты было вложено минимум 25 процентов финансирования и 100 процентов на нужды организации и на утверждения. Я жил и работал в Риддере для того, чтобы помочь организации участвовать в реализации этих проектов. Организация обратилась ко мне с целью оказать содействие в этих проектах. КОРПУС МИРА - это организация доброй воли, а также организация по обмену культур. Основная цель волонтера КРПУСА МИРА – это изучать и понимать культуру другой страны. Я осознанно принял решение принять приглашение приехать в Казахстан. Я учил русский язык. Я изучил и понял многое о Казахстане, еще находясь и работая в своей стране. Я изучил и понял Казахстан, установив личные отношения и связи с людьми этой страны. Я ел традиционную еду, жил в казахстанской семье 9 месяцев. Я принимал участие во всех сферах жизни вместе с людьми Восточного Казахстана. Я изучил экологию Алтайских гор, ходил в походы, катался на лыжах вместе с моими лучшими друзьями в самых удивительных местах Алтайских гор. Все это – моя жизнь в Казахстане. Это не каникулы или отпуск для меня. Я здесь жил, чтобы познакомиться поближе со страной, которую я выбрал еще находясь в США, а также, чтобы познакомить людей из Казахстана с культурой, традициями и обычаями моей страны.

И самое главное - я посвятил свою жизнь проблемам экологии, так как люблю очень эту область деятельности. Я принял приглашение приехать в Казахстан, потому что знаю, что Миру нужны партнеры, работающие вместе, чтобы вместе решать проблемы возникающие в мире. Я приехал в Казахстан с одной главной целью – работать с людьми другой страны, которые хотят сделать экологию лучше. Я познакомился с людьми, которые говорили на другом языке и имели другую культуру, но я сразу узнавал, что эти люди работали в « АК – КЕМ – РИДДЕРЕ» судя по их отношению к природе, их взглядам на экологию. Работа, проделанная мной в Казахстане, демонстрирует мое отношение к этой стране
