'''Nathan Epling''' began his Peace Corps service on April 16, 1999 in San Francisco, CA together with the Group 253. Following staging, 253 spent one week in Manila for basic orientation prior to arriving at their permanent training location in Iloilo City, Panay Island.  At the conclusion of the week, volunteers received their permanent site locations- Epling was assigned to Provincial Planning and Development Office for the province of Camiguin in Mindanao.

During the seven weeks in Iloilo, Epling served with three other volunteers composing the Water/ Sanitation sector.  They trained in the construction of spring development, shallow and deep well repair, toilet and septic tank construction, water distribution and storage, and solid waste management. Trainers provided particular emphasis on "ferro-cement" construction of large water storage "jars."

Nathan Epling began his Peace Corps service on April 16, 1999 in San Francisco, CA together with the Group 253.

Language and cultural training accompanied this technical work each day. Epling received instruction in the Visayan (Cebuano) language of the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
