Over 100 PCVs were evacuated from Uzbekistan on Sept. 22, 2001 following that 9/11 attacks.  Though some returned and the program re-opened after a short suspension, eventually Peace Corps was unable to continue in Uzbekistan.  A few UZ-10s entered the Foreign Service, other stayed by finding private employment, and other try to visit. In March 2006 I began my service as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Uganda, East Africa. The first 10 weeks in country (March-May 2006) were spent in training learning about the local culture and language and completing technical training in the community health and well-being program. Beginning in May 2006 I was posted to Kasambya Trading Center in western Uganda, Mubende District. My main project in my time here has been the establishment of a community computer center. The center trains people of all ages from primary youth to adults, as well as providing access to IT resources such as the Internet, a hard-loaded digital library, and scanning and photocopying facilities. Specific achievements I have realized in this project include the developing of a comprehensive IT syllabus for teaching different age groups, supplementing of primary and secondary school students’ education through the use of digital multimedia resources, creating accounting and other managerial systems for the smooth running of this non-profit organization and gaining knowledge and experience in deploying a network of computers. Other projects I have completed in my time as a Peace Corps Volunteer include an HIV outreach campaign for testing, education and care of positive individuals, secondary math and science tutoring, and working on the educational development of a unit for the blind at the local government primary school.
