Info about the Soccer and Literacy: An After-School Program

It is well known amongst agencies concerned with the creation of a productive citizenry that the utilization of sports is an effective youth development tool. Countless groups and organizations world-wide use sports to guide and direct the growth of youth in a healthy manner. The proposed project will combine sports and literacy to work with orphans and vulnerable children in a semi-rural village in South Africa. The planned project has the following objectives:

SOCCER 1. To create healthy bodies, minds and spirits 2. To provide a productive, positive and fun after-school activity 3. To increase feelings of self-worth and self-esteem through improved body image 4. To facilitate communication and interaction with others through team sports 5. To offer gender-equality activities through involvement in sports

LITERACY 1. To promote a culture of reading for enjoyment 2. To strengthen English skills 3. To develop the ability to respond to literature through discussion and writing 4. To encourage personal involvement with language

Eighty learners will take part in the soccer/literacy after-school program. Forty orphans or vulnerable youth from high school campuses will be identified and selected to participate in the program and both genders will be equally served. There will be two girls’ teams and two boys’ teams. Learners will attend three days of soccer practice/competition and two days of literacy activities.
