Info about the Chiundaponde Construction of Library and Resource Center
The community of Chiundaponde in the Mpika District of Zambia lies in the Bangweulu Game Management area in Zambia's northern province, just south of Tanzania. This community believes that the construction of a library/resource center will provide a much needed space for learning, discussions and meetings. The goals of this project are to increase the literacy rates among adults and children, provide community storage and access to educational materials and provide a location in which workshops and organizational meetings may take place year round. The need for this Center came to their attention after a successful workshop for HIV/AIDS orphans which provided education in HIV/AIDS, environmental issues and sustainable farming and gardening skills. The group realized that they could not continue meeting during the rainy season due to the lack of an indoor center. The group's organizer began discussing the concept of a library/resource center and the community immediately organized to provide support. People have already begun collecting local materials necessary for construction in hopes that additional funding can be found through the Peace Corps Partnership Program. Community members trained in brick laying and carpentry began volunteering. Others have volunteered to transport materials. A kiln has been constructed to fire bricks for the project. Surrounding villages have also volunteered to help. the community has come together to make this project a reality not only for today, but future generations as well.
