Info about the Camp MDARLE 2009
Camp MDARLE 2009 will provide over 120 Cameroonian youth with the opportunity to improve their futures through life skills training and health education. Over the course of 4 weeks, boys and girls ages 12 to 18 will learn about health, play sports, and plan for their futures.
Camp MDARLE 2009 is based on the success of the Camp MDARLE 2008. Campers are divided into teams that are lead by an older high-school student that has completed a two-day training. Each day a different health topic is studied (HIV/AIDS, malaria, dental health & nutrition) and different sports are played. Also, gender equity activities as well as sessions about planning for the future will be lead by professional Cameroonians each day.
One of the most important components of Camp MDARLE are the characteristics that are discussed each day. Maturity, discipline, attitude, respect, loyalty and enthusiasm (spelling MDARLE) are the six characteristics that the children learn about and discuss. At the end of the week, each camper will receive an award signifying the characteristic they have best shown throughout the week.
The community is requesting money to buy material goods such as T-shirts, art supplies and other small items. In order to show their support of the project, community members have organized to provide food and housing for involved Peace Corps Volunteers. At the completion of Camp MDARLE 2009, the community will have hundreds of better educated children that will benefit from the experience for the rest of their lives.
