Info about the Messages to Our Community Mural Project

Visitors to one of the poorest areas in Moldova would observe that nearly one-third of the homes in the village are abandoned, and that the elderly and children make up the majority of the population. Typical of many Moldovan communities, approximately half of the households with school-aged children have one or both parents working abroad. Students with little parental guidance often struggle finding valuable summer activities, and activities in the visual arts are non-existent. When the director of the local 5-12 school proposed that the Peace Corps volunteer and a local teacher complete a mural at the school about valuing education, Messages to our Community Mural Project was developed. Messages to our Community Mural Project will be a 3 month program for village students that are passionate about using visual art to improve environmental, social, and educational conditions in their community.

The goals of this project are to provide healthy summer activities for youth, to draw attention to social issues, to teach students how art can be used as a tool for raising social awareness, and to develop art skills among area youth.

Students will participate in summer seminars and art lessons to learn about international artists that have created political or social themed art that raises social awareness. Each student participating in the summer art project will complete 3 pieces of art with a similar goal, which will be displayed in various locations throughout the community during the summer. The three summer exhibits will focus on different problems in our community- environmental issues, social issues, and education. The final project will be a mural at the high school. The quote “Learning Empowers All People” will be part of the mural.

The majority of the funding necessary will go towards necessary wall repairs to complete the mural project, and for program supplies. The community has committed to donate labor and rent at the government building and House of Culture. The entire community will be impacted by this project; it will draw attention to issues in the village while promoting the visual arts.
