Info about the Latrine Construction

This proposal aims to construct 50 latrines in a village in Senegal. The current lack of latrines leads to villagers relieving themselves just outside of their compounds. This is a primary factor in initiating the oral-fecal cycle that leads to many illnesses. Further, for lack of other options, dangerous items are discarded carelessly outside of compounds and end up in the hands and mouths of children, or injuring community members.

This village is home to more than 600 men, women and children, a local primary school and a pre-school. The community has determined that health and sanitation are among their top concerns and have sought projects to address these and improve their environment. With the installation of a latrine for each household in the village and supplemental health discussions, sanitation will be drastically improved, decreasing illness and providing a safe place to dispose of dangerous items. The people of this village lack the means to accomplish this on their own. They have pledged to contribute a portion of the labor and materials, nearly 20% of the total project cost, as well as a cash contribution equal to 10% of the total project. With the assistance of a partnership contribution, this community can make their village a better place to live.
