I was part of the first group to go to Poland. Along with a group who was heading to Hungary, we were the first ones to go to Eastern Europe. Being the first means that things were pretty chaotic at first.
After training in Torun, I was sent to the small town of Olesno in the south west part of Poland. It was rural and remote and lovely. I taught English at the local high school.
I also worked on cleaning and renovating a Jewish cemetary which had been long negected on the edge of town. The town had been mostly Jewish before WWII.
We arrived during the crazy transition between communism and democracy, so I was able to see that change up close. We witnessed the first free elections in the country. And we saw the economic chaos that came after.
