A Women’s Group in Vanuatu has an existing meeting house that is currently unable to be used at night due to lack of proper lighting. The group would like to acquire a solar lighting system for the house to give them a better source of light for creating handicrafts and to give overnight visitors a source of light.

Currently, women weave mats and baskets and sew clothes in their own homes or kitchens at night, after work in family gardens can no longer be done and children are asleep. This work is often done by kerosene or candle light, sometimes with the aid of a flashlight. Not only will a solar lighting system make it easier for women to see their work, improving quality and production, but the group collaboration will increase shared knowledge and traditional skills. The women aim to sell their handicrafts in local markets, with profits going to both the individuals and the group. In addition, the house is often used as a guest house for overnight visitors to the village, and with good lighting, the women are hoping that they will be able to attract more visitors to the guest house and consequently increase their income.
