Susan Shepler is an Associate Professor of International Peace and Conflict Resolution in the School of International Service at American University in Washington DC. Her research is on youth and conflict in Africa generally, and on the reintegration of former child soldiers in Sierra Leone specifically. She has consulted for UNICEF, the IRC, and Search for Common Ground.

She is married to Wusu Kargbo, a Sierra Leonean and former Head of the Education Department at Milton Margai College of Education and Technology. They met as fellow teachers at Gbendembu Secondary School during Susan's Peace Corps service.
