Info about the Mbandjock Palm Oil Tree Nursery and Plantation
Some time ago, the village of Mbandjock benefited from a project which would have grown palm trees for the production of palm oil. However, due to a lack of investment knowledge, the trees that were planted stopped producing and there is nothing to replace them. A group in the community called CIG started to take action against the lack of long-term community planning, especially in the palm tree plantation area.
Members of the CIG Group has participated in trainings on how to properly cultivate the palm trees so that they not only reproduce, but are plentiful enough so that one can extract oil. The group has at their dispostion a total of six hectacres of cleared land in two different locations. Because of current economic constraints, it is imperative that the current means of income generation are extended and new ones are created.
The group is proposing to establish a Palm Tree Nursery and Plantation, in which trees will be properly grown and reproduced. The oil that is extracted from the trees will be both put into an account and re-invested in the plantation and be used to pay the participating families for their labor. Partnership Funds wil be used to purchase the necessary equipment for building a nursery, as well as ingredients for an effective fertilizer. The community will be contributing labor costs, maintenance costs, and will be paying for the initial seedlings.
