Madjatom is located in an area surrounded by five smaller villages in northeastern Togo, with a population of 4000. It is the site of a weekly market which draws from over 50 kilometers outside the town. However, the nearest Health Care facility is over 5 kilometers away and is not equipped to provide care to the combined population of both villages. The absence of a clinic creates a lack of access to health care. The people in Madjatom are determined to open a local health care facility. They have been able to construct the building, purchased necessary furniture and have even collected money to purchase medicines. However, before they will be able to open the clinic, the community must purchase basic medical supplies. Partnership funding assistance has been requested to purchase beds, scales, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, minor surgical utensils and other necessary supplies and medicines. A community based organization, COGES will be responsible for the budget, monitoring cost and utilization and will perform monthly analysis and reporting. Presence of the clinic will provide, for the first time in this community, access for children to immunizations and preventive health care. Women, approximately 100 per year, will be able to receive pre-natal services and give birth in sanitary conditions. And, the entire population will have access to health care of illness and injury, and necessary health care services.
