The Food Security Action Committee (FSAC) was created to help PCVs utilize the new resources effectively. Food security is to make nutritious, culturally appropriate food more available for people - either by improving nutrition, improving access to food, or improving food distribution.

What is food security?

Food security refers to the availability of food and one's access to it. A household is considered food-secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation.

-from Food Security on Wikipedia

There are four pillars to food security:

Food Availability

Environment Volunteers are on the front lines of food production in Ghana. They are active in getting seeds into the ground; nurturing the plants, trees, and soil; and harvesting the crops. They help design conservation strategies to protect wildlife habitat and help farmers with animal rearing projects. These efforts help ensure that food is available for local consumption and export

Food Access

Our Environment and SED Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that food is made accessible throughout Ghana. They help process raw materials, store harvested crops, and package and market food and animal products so that the products get to market. They strengthen agribusiness ventures and improve internal and external links between food producers and viable markets. Through income generation activities, SED Volunteers also help individuals and communities to purchase food and feed families.

Related Projects

Food Utilization

All volunteers increase awareness by conducting outreach activities to ensure that people are aware of basic nutrition concepts. H/WS Volunteers provide information to communities so that members can make nutritionally-wise choices when feeding their families and so that they handle food and water safely to minimize the spread of water and food-borne illness. Environment volunteers also help to establish wood lots and train people in making charcoal and constructing fuel efficient stoves to help communities cook food safely and effectively.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is a specialised agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernise and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all.
