Info about the English Literacy Center

The Creative Literacy Program is a way for youth to prepare for their future. This project involves two parts: a theatrical book club and an English resource center. Students will be responsible for writing and directing their own one act plays and putting on a cumulative theatre performance called the Literary Carnival in English using resources from the English resource center. They will be gaining further knowledge of the English language, experience in preparing budgets and purchasing necessary items, become familiar with planning and managing projects and events, and work on team building and group activities. All of these experiences will not only give young people a creative outlet and a way to exercise their knowledge, but will also provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for those who want to learn English in a fun way. The Central Library System also wants to develop their infrastructure and resources in order to help those with disabilities have equal chances to learn English and be included in social initiatives. Often, those with disabilities are ignored, castigated from ‘normal’ society or not provided opportunities offered to others. Citizens of the city and the Central Library System want to provide these opportunities and avert stigma and discrimination by raising awareness of those with disabilities through inclusion in library projects and especially the English theatrical book club. It is imperative that this project comes to full realization as it will provide social awareness for those with disabilities and will provide tools for the growth of youth in this community. The project will also create a sustainable resource that can be used for years to come with the potential to impact many people in the community.
