Info about the Daughter to Work Day

Take your Daughter to Work Day

Activity: Local Mentors Share Life Experiences

Number of Participants: 1 Mentor to 10 or less Students

Materials Needed: Trees to sit under (preferable mango trees), chairs, pure water for all the participants.

Cost: Minimal (5GHC per mentor to Free of charge)

Summary: The Gender and Youth Development group annually celebrates Take Your Daughter to Work Day. Each Peace Corps Volunteer is given the free will to plan and organize their own activities. My program was organized with the coordination of the District Girl Child Education Coordinator. Ask the GES Coordinator to help you find some local women that have succeeded to reach their professional career or have struggled to obtain a career goal. It is best to get mentors from various professional sectors. We were fortunate to get a nurse, police women, a representative from the GES office, and a school matron.

Since the size of the group was 50 people and below. We were able to have an informal environment. When numbers increase, people expect to have Chair persons and MC elected to coordinate the event.

After a short introduction, we placed the mentors in 4 different areas and with enough benches for the students. The students counted off to make groups of four and each mentor was given a group. The mentors were instructed to tell their story and allow the girls to ask questions when they come along. After 20 minutes, the groups rotated and the cycle continued until all the groups met with all the mentors.

The program was a great success and the mentors were willing to do it again. In our program each mentor was given 5 GHC but they would have done it for free. Some things to watch out for are to ensure that all mentors confirm their coming 2 days before and students will actually come.
