Capacity-Building Workshop on the Health Benefits of Moringa

Purpose and Approach

The Lawra Methodist Clinic will work with Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) to teach about the nutritional and medicinal benefits of moringa, and how to produce Moringa Soap to 10 women's groups and People Living with HIV (PLHIV) groups in Ghana.

The staff and patients of the Lawra Methodist Clinic use moringa to provide medicinal and health treatment to their patients. They also produce moringa soap as a means of income generation. The clinic is primarily funded through the sale of these moringa products. The earnings from the soap sales enable the staff to sustain the cost of running the clinic and orphanage, and pay for the treatment of the patients.

For this project, the organizing PCVs conducted a 5-day moringa training workshop in the Upper West Region, which was attended by 10 other PCVs and their counterparts. Once the workshop was completed, the representatives of these groups will return to their respective villages with the necessary tools, knowledge and skills needed to train their peers and colleagues on how to make moringa soap and how to improve their communities’ health through better sanitation practices.

In essence, the intent of the project is to teach about the medicinal and nutritional values of moringa and how to produce moringa soap. This project would bring together representatives of women and PLHIV groups, in an effort to empower them and to promote healthier lifestyles.

Background Information

The Moringa leaf has been proven to have the following health and nutritional benefits: increase the natural defenses of the body, provide nourishment to the eyes and brain, promote normal functioning of the liver and kidneys, lower the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, promote proper digestion, act as an antioxidant, act as an anti-inflammatory, improve the overall immune system of the body.

Empower women and PLHIV groups (20 participants) by:

  • Teaching about the moringa tree: how to cultivate them, and their nutritional and medicinal values
  • Teaching Moringa Soap Production as means of improving community health
  • Encouraging participants to use the moringa soap production skill as a potential means of income generation.
  • Assigning the participants leadership roles in their communities

Action Plan

  1. Select counterparts to attend the workshop.
  2. Buy supplies for workshop.
  3. Secure venue.
  4. Arrange accommodations for event participants.
  5. Arrange food for participants.
  6. Transportation of equipment and Lawra Methodist Clinic staff to event venue.
  7. Conduct workshop.

Project Reflection and Sustainability

An instituted team of selected PCVs and community counterparts will be responsible for ensuring that the project activities are implemented according to plan. The participants will return to their respective communities and share the knowledge and skills gained with their colleagues and also implement activities learned at the training.
