Info about the Camp GLOW

Each Summer, 8th-10th grade boys and girls from all over Ukraine participate in camps “Girls Leading Our World” (GLOW) and “Teaching Our Boys to Excel” (TOBE). The week-long overnight camps are organized by Peace Corps Ukraine’s Gender and Development (GAD) Working Group in conjunction with Ukrainian partner organizations. One of the primary aims of the camps is to facilitate discussion of gender-related issues such as domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, eating disorders, and gender-based stigma and discrimination. In addition to providing a safe and supportive environment for discussion of these serious but often ignored issues within society, the camps will help prepare its participants to tackle these issues in their home communities. They will learn how to effect change by generating discussion among their peers and initiating and leading projects with the encouragement and guidance of their sponsoring Peace Corps Volunteer. As participants come to the camp from all over Ukraine, the camp also offers them a chance to break down stereotypes they may have about Ukrainians from other parts of the country, people with whom they might otherwise have little, if any, contact. The camp’s partner organization, “Light of Our World” will pay over 25 percent of the costs associated with running the camp. The Partnership Grant will help pay for room and board at the camp site and lesson materials.
